Got my Enteroclysis done last week.
Below is my experience.
Firstly I must say, it was painful.
We reported at the hospital at 9AM. A night before the procedure I was prescribed to take a few tablets to clear my stomach of any gas and to have bowel movement before the procedure. It was normal, and not like the colonoscopy prep that I had assumed.
We registered at the hospital. I was accompanied by my dad as an attendant was asked to come along. I went to the radiology department and the nurse there inserted a cannula and then I was asked to go to the ER insertion of the tube. There was a small queue. Waiting at that time, every passing minute seemed to be like an hour. I was in my T-shirt and pyjamas
When my name was called, I went into the ER. My dad waited outside. There were two male technicians. I was asked to lie on my left, on the table. There was a large instrument over the table (sorry don’t know what it is called).
Then I was asked to lie straight. The technician put some gel in my right nostril and asked me to take dep breaths. Then he started inserting the tube in that nostril and I started yelling in pain. I just couldn’t stay still. It was so painful that I had tears in my eyes. When the tube reached my throat I badly gagged twice. The other technician had to hold my head to keep me still. I was continuously yelling in pain. At that moment I felt the Chron's pain is nothing as compared to this one. After a while I was asked to turn on my left, and the machine above me made some sounds. I was asked to keep breathing normally. Then I was asked to lie straight again, for the last part and keep breathing deep.
At the end I was asked to take a few deep breathes so as to confirm my lungs were working fine and then the remaining end of the tube was taped on the right side near the eyebrow.
Then I came out. I walked to the CT Scan room with my dad. I waited outside the room as I was next in line for the procedure. When my name was called I went into the chilled room. I was asked to change into a gown for the scan, with absolutely nothing underneath. My dad had to help me change as the tube was making it difficult to take off the T-shirt. I wore the gown and the nurse asked me to lie on the table for the scan. There were two female nurses. For a minute I felt weird wearing nothing under the gown but the pain in the nose and the tension didn’t allow me to think about anything else. I was covered with a blanket till my chest that helped me to get relief from the very cold room.
I was asked to raise my hands above my head and stay like that. I was then asked to slide a little backwards towards the machine to position myself correctly. A minute later I began to slide in the machine for a bit. I was asked to breathe in and hold, couple of times. Then the nurse said she is giving me the contrast now, which will make me feel a little hot for a while. She injected the contrast through the other end of the tube. After injecting the contrast for a while she said she is going to give a pain-killer injection as the next dose of contrast will cause pain. After the pain killer injection she again resumed giving the contrast. I didn’t feel anything till the last moment but within a minute of the last dose of contrast I started feeling very nauseous. I started to take deep breaths to avoid vomiting, but I couldn’t control and I puked on the blanket and the gown itself. (It was good I was no longer in my regular clothes) The vomiting was so fast and so strong that I couldn’t even get time to sit up straight. I vomited all out while I was lying down. I was again given another dose of contrast to complete the scan but as soon as I got that I again began to feel nauseous, but this time I atleast could feel it coming so I shouted and pressed the SOS button to alert the nurse about the same. This time she was ready with a bowl and asked me to vomit in that. Then I was given another contrast dose of contrast, the third time. This time finally the scan was done properly.
At the end one of the nurses removed the tube from my nose, just by pulling it out in one go. I yelled again.
Then I was asked to get up and change. I changed and was asked to wait for half an hour to get the cannula removed. After 30 minutes I got it removed as was free to leave.
I had little coconut water after that and had a light lunch when I reached home. From later that evening till the next evening I kept on having watery stools, as a reaction to the dye that was given.
Sorry for a very long post but I hope this post helps others like me
