Teens breast examined by pediatrician

I know I did when I was a teen, my parents suggested that he performed a complete exam once I turned 12. and of course they were always there to make sure he did..

@Amy93 were one or both of your parents in the exam room during your exams? Did they witness your entire exam? When was the last time they were in the exam room with you?

This happened to me and it was probably the last time I saw the pediatrician. I was about 11 or 12 and had started getting breast buds, but within a matter of weeks mom had gotten me my first bra.

@Emom You almost got through the pediatrician years without having to have one. And then in your last exam with a pediatrician, you had just started to develop enough that the time was apparently right to start examining you.

Which is interesting, as you probably right away drew comparisons between the style of your adult doc vs your pediatrician. And your adult doc started the 1st time with you, at a point where they were further along in their development.

Did you ever wish that your breasts had been developed enough so that your pediatrician may have examined them during a few more visits ? Did you ever get to the point of enjoying the process ?

I believe that I have been getting my breasts examine since 12 but they didn’t touch or anything. Just a very quick look!

What good is a breast exam if they dont touch your breast?

My pediatrician never did a breast exam on me. He just took a quick look while moving my bra.

A pediatrician may look at a girl's breasts to assess breast development as a part of Tanner staging without doing a full breast exam. The breasts should be exposed anyway for listening to her heart.

@Dr_F as @steth says a visual can assess how development is coming along.

Uhhh, they do not need to be exposed because I have not had mine exposed to listen to my heart.

Disagree about the need to expose the breasts (or at least the left breast) for heart listening. There's no way to get a good listen to the mitral valve without exposing the breast. I have a friend whose mitral valve prolapse was diagnosed in her early 20s by the first doctor who asked her to take off her bra

When I searched for "mitral valve prolapse diagnose bra on or off" nothing relevant was found either way. From my experience with heart issues, a-fib with my sub, a cardiologist or attentive doctor will hear an issue. Exposing a breast should not be a requirement. As moving the stethoscope under the bra into the proper area should hear what is needed.

I am not medical professional so what do I know.

I started to develop early and my parents were very concerned about me developing early so I remember breast exams at the pediatrician as early as 11. My younger sister started getting them when she turned 11 or 12 too.

I recall the same every time I would visit the doctor. I remember comments about the appearance of my breasts but they were never touched by a physician.
