Longest chest auscultation ever

I have had some kind of viral infection for over 3 weeks . I went back to the GP today as I'm still wheezy (I do have asthma) have sore ears (making me dizzy) and nausea with some temperatures. Anyway after hearing me wheeze without even using the stethoscope first he decided to listen . He listened everywhere including under my armpits and down both sides of my chest wall. He got the nurse in as a chaperone and asked me to take all my top half off . He then listened all over back and front again . He also percussed all over my back, chest and breasts. It was the longest auscultation I've ever had. Lasted a good 10mins easily .Anyway I have pneumonia so also got sent for a chest x-Ray. Anyone else been listened to for that long ?

Well it sounds like he performed a complete and proper chest auscultation ( a lot of doctors don't listen under the armpits). It is performed to listen for crepitant rale which establishes the existence of pneumonia. It is normally discoverable or pronounced towards the root of the lungs, under the armpit and beneath the clavicle, inasmuch these are the areas less easily pressed upon by an effusion ( excess fluid built up around the lung).

So your doctor appears to be very thorough and appears to be an excellent clinician as it is often overlooked when auscultating someone.

As Aussie said do take care of yourself and hope that you have a speedy recovery.

Once many years ago I saw my ex wife being auscultated precisely like that and she had also a pneumonia: also had thorax x ray after.

wasn't percussed but was listened saying "99" here is " 33" at all areas. The auscultation of armpits and sides is extremely important as was already explained here by another member RN 1993 ( she was also auscultated at her supraclavicular areas )Any way hope you are doing better!

The doctor I went to as a kid used to do long stethoscope chest exams, easily ten minutes, if not more. Up and down both back and chest, sitting and lying down. I remember at times he would have me say "E" each time he touched the stethoscope to my chest and back. His abdominal auscultation was almost as long.

When I was 13 I had a pneumonia and after two weeks of fever at home my mom decided to bring me to the ER.

There I was listened thoroughly by two doctors listening to all my back at the same time, also they focused on the left side of my chest where the wheeze was louder I guess.

A bit disappointed that both the doctors were males because I saw some beautiful women walking around the ER corridors...

Probably when i was 12 yrs old on a preventive exam at the schooldoctor. Since that just very superficial

Hope you soon feel better! I also hope the drain it has on your strength and energy from this pneumonia is gone as fast as lightening! I am very happy to hear you have a very good, very skilled clinician as your physician! HUGS for you!

I have had countless long detailed auscultations from my GP in addition to my pulmonologist and cardiologist I had to see several years ago. Due to moderate to severe asthma and the arthritis in my chest wall and ribcage, the arthritis is under the care of my orthopaedic surgeon, it is common for him and his PA to do thorough auscultation due to the arthritis. If I have an appointment with my orthopaedic for other ortho reasons, he will still occasionally ask if he can auscultate if I am having an increase of symptoms in my chest wall, ribcage or lungs. My GP monitors my asthma and communicates with my surgeon regarding the arthritis and its impact on my asthma etc. He also communicates with my pulmonologist and cardiologist as needed.

My GYN will does a very thorough auscultation as he is keenly aware of my pulmonary issues. The arthritis will produce all symptoms of an MI from mild to acute with and without warning as well as other pulmonary issues. My GYN will communicate with my GP if he suspects or hears something of concern or question.

My GP and GYN also give a very thorough abdominal exam with auscultation.

I have not had pneumonia since I was 4yrs old. Bronchitis, URI and the respiratory problems associated with the flu are what I deal with and the problems the arthritis causes me in addition to my asthma. I am grateful to not deal with pneumonia! All of this makes for very long and thorough auscultations! It is what it is.

Unfortunately, I have never been auscultated for longer than a minute or two. But would love to be auscultated like you were!!! 😄

My heartbeat is often very irregular, I have cardiomyopathy. I get a very long listen, to all the heart areas and also for rate and rhythm. My doctor always lets me listen too...
