I've been to two practices in the past several years depending on insurance. At both, vitals are done by a PA, and then the patient waits for the PCP. At each practice, I had female doctors (one my choice, and at the other one she was the only doc accepting new patients). I am always offered a gown and do use it, wearing it over my underpants. The exception was last year, when the PA asked me to take everything off. “Everything?” I asked for confirmation and the PA said yes. They did look at a skin problem I had around my groin area and were monitoring, so maybe that's why.
At my general PCP, she auscultates under my shirt but that's about it unless I bring up any particular concern I need her to check.At the urologist, it's mostly been bottomless with a drape if you're going to have a test like a cystoscopy or pulling pants down simply assess the plumbing.
At the practice I go to, the nurse practitioner hands me a gown and tells me to undres, once she’s completed the first part of the exam.
The last genital/prostrate exam i had was with a woman doctor, and she just told me to drop my trousers and pants,and get on the bed.
I had some testicular pain about a year ago and could only see a PA as my PCP is too busy for patients, both happened to be female. I made the appointment to get a refill on medications and i told the receptionist over the phone that I had some bad groin pain. The PA basically spent the appointment talking about my meds and tried snding the appointment; I embarrassingly had to bring up the testicular pain. She seemed annoyed a bit and just had me stand in front of her while she was seated and drop my pants. She actually did a thorough exam and thought I may have had a swollen epididymitis. A few urine tests, an ultrasound, and a couple of talking only visits later I was referred to urology. There I also saw a female PA who examined me the same way and sent me to PT, where I was found to have a simple pelvic floor issue that actually fixed my pain as well as a few other issues I didn’t even know were happening.
I have a female PA and at my last physical just just had me drop my pants and pull my underwear to my knees no gown. I actually kind of preferred it that way
I have been seen by a couple of different female providers. Once was for a physical she left me dressed and at the end for the genital and rectal exam had me drop my pants and underwear. The other time was do to some pain when I urinated. After talking about the issue she said she should probably check, she told me to stand up and drop my pants and underwear, after she was done she thought for a minute and said she probably check my prostate and asked if I preferred to lay down or just bend over the exam table? I told her it was up to her she was the one doing it. She told me to go ahead bend over it was easier that way. Both times were pretty much straight and to the point, done very professionally and courteous.
I've posted this on other threads, but I've seen the same female PA for the past 12 years and you really can't call the visit a physical exam in any way! I don't even get underssed - it's more of a wellness conversation. I always get an EKG which always shows LVH which I dont have - and thats about it. It feels like a waste of time so I only go every few years.With the rise of "evidence based" medicine I don't think most people get regular old fashioned physicals anymore. I would definitely go more often if I got a complete exam. Even though it can be embarassing, at least there is a chance they might catch something early.
I have a female urologist who treats both male and female patients, and in her practice she uses the same gyno chair for everyone.Before the examination, I am asked to remove all clothing below the waist, including underwear, and I remain barefoot. There is no gown or covering provided, so I feel completely uncovered from the waist down while waiting for the examination to begin. When placed on the chair it can be adjusted in different ways, with changes in inclination and positioning, and there are examination lights directed toward the area being assessed. Once I am positioned, my thighs are supported by leg rests, leaving me in a posture that feels very open and exposed. I cannot easily change position or move away once the examination starts, which increases the feeling of being dependent on the doctor and the procedure.The urologist adjusts the chair carefully to obtain the best access for testicular palpation, when finished she adjust for complete penis examination then finally for the rectal exam using -after her fingers- the ultrasound probe. The experience requires a lot of trust towards her because I am placed in a position where I must remain still and wait completion of the procedure which is invasive and sometimes painful.
My female urologist just has me lower my shorts and underwear examines my penis and testicles then has me bend over the table for the prostate exam. I would much prefer a gown but that’s the way she does it.
For the last 30 years nearly all of my doctors have been women. One had me undress completely and cover with a paper sheet, one had me strip from the waist down and use a paper sheet, one had me completely naked with no covering at all for a skin check, and one had me strip to my underwear and use a paper sheet, but I ended up with my underwear off for the latter twice because she needed to look at areas normally covered by underwear. My gastroenterologist has never examined me in her office. Of course she sees my butt and anus, as well as the inside of my rectum and colon. One surgical NP just had me drop my pants and underwear for a quick hernia evaluation. She did tell me that she enjoyed our visits.
When I had a female urologist, she'd just have me drop trou for the genital and prostate exam.My current female PCP has me in a gown that opens in the front. I always do as the nurse or doctor directs, so the first two exams were underwear on under the gown. The last two exams (with a different nurse doing the rooming/intake) I have been nude under the gown/robe (as directed). Honestly, I don't know if the doctor has changed her preference or if it's the new nurse's routine. The doctor hasn't reacted any differently

When that part of the exam came they would just ask me to lower my briefs, except for one time!My doctor was a very attractive woman, late 30s, early 40s. I had been seeing her as my primary for 2-3 years. Always asked me to lower my briefs, would cup my package, ask me to cough and have me turn and bend over for the prostate exam. However one time, she had me drop my pants as I stood in front of her….and SHE lowered my briefs, rather slowly I might add. I was really surprised. I know she was married, in fact her husband was her partner in the practice. Saw him once and didn’t like him.I was looking forward to the next physical, but she switched her practice to a “concierge” practice that would cost $185/month!! I said well, forget that!! Really too bad!! I always wondered if anything was going on in her mind….sadly I’ll never know!!
I had a female doctor, and I complained of groin pain she had me lie down and felt over my underwear, no cough. Switched doctors and brought up my complaint and she did a very thorough genital exam. And found a hernia. For that one I pulled down pants and underwear and stood.
Usually, I am directed to strip to my underwear and given a gown. When it came time for the genital/rectal exam, I simply lower my underwear to about my knees. If the urologist is examining the area, I usually just drop trou, but for some things, like cystoscopy, I'm stripped from the waist down. I have had other doctors in the past who have either had me in underwear with no gown and drop them when needed, or "strip as you go" and drop trousers and underwear at the appropriate time.
I've a female GP who's a very kind person.A while back, I had what turned out to be a small cyst on one of my testicles (it has disappeared, thankfully).So after telling her my worries, she just kindly told me to drop my trousers and underwear, and lay down on the exam table (it was a traditional one, with a sheet of paper).She gave both my balls a very thorough feel up, and she couldn't find it. I guided her finger to where it was, and she gave it another thorough check and told me not to be worried, as it was not anything concerning.She did not wear any gloves and was very gentle. Of course I did shower beforehand. I always do that when I know someone is going to do a check up or exam of my body.I'm very self-conscious.
I have a female physician. She has the nurse enter the room and stand behind me. Then she orders me to lower my pants and underwear. She is seated on a stool. She examines my genitals. Then I can pull my pants and underwear up. The nurse has a clear view of my ass. I always wonder if she can see my genitals too.
At the office I go to now, it is a toss up of what happens. I have been asked to undress to a gown and I’ve also just stayed in my clothes. Usually as the exam progresses, once we get to the point I know my female NP will check my genitals and do the rectal exam she will tell me she needs to go grab one of the MA’s or nurses. Usually it is right after she palpates my abdomen, she will stop and remind me that intimate exams require a chaperone in the room. I accept that and she tells me she’s going to step out and grab someone and that when she returns she will have me stand and either lift my gown or lower my pants depending on how I was set up which I’ve realized just depends on who rooms you.She and another person are normally back in less than a minute, I stand up as she takes a seat on her stool and it’s always my favorite phrase “go ahead and expose your genitalia please” I like when I have pants on because I feel like it adds suspense having to undo a belt, unbutton, lower pants then under wear. Instead when I am in a gown I just have to lower my boxers then lift the gown. I push everything down to my knees and she proceeds with her exam. The observer is normally standing off to the side with a full view. Some pay more attention than others. Then I am asked to turn and bend over the table and get a DRE.
I’ve neither worn a gown nor had a routine prostate exam in years. Even when there was a suspicion of prostate cancer because of elevated PSA levels there was no prostate exam, but an immediate referral for prostate biopsy . The only times my genitals have been examined recently is by my (female) dermatologist during annual skin checks and then I simply lower my shorts. She generally spreads my cheeks briefly as well. The whole process takes approximately 30 seconds.
I had a female PA, I was never undressed or removed any clothing for any part of my yearly physical exam.
