Help - Feel bloated and Gassy After Enema

I really hate feeling bloated with air and gassy after taking an enema (epson salt followed by saline rinse). Before an enema I let water run through the tube to remove any air. Regardless, after I have expelled I feel bloated and a few hours later the farts start. How can I simply end my sesssion feeling empty and cleansed without the gas?

I would be cautious with the Epsom salts. The normal saline or salt mixture shouldn't create any issues, but the laxative effects of the Epsom salts may be having an impact on you. I don't have any problems with regular tap water, but I'm not trying to retain them for any substantial period of time like I would with coffee.

Your enemas may be causing a shift in your intestinal flora towards species that produces more gas. Even plain water can cause a shift in the species.

I'm going to try again with just saline and see what happens. Thanks a bunch.

I consider that a normal side effect. Give it a few days, and you'll likely feel better.

I often use a bag of soda water and then a bag of Epsom salt water. Do not have any problems w/gas. 2 tsp of each in the bags.

Could it be that you're not getting cleaned out enough? If you routinely take only one 2 qt. bag per session, you might still have some "stuff" lodged in your upper bowel. It might be that the stuff starts to move around (or tries to) a few hours after your enema. Do your symptoms disappear almost immediately after your next normal "poop"?

I know that for myself, the first enema usually produces "stuff" of course but my second one usually does too... And sometimes it's more than the first! I usually do at least three enemas (2 qt. each) in a session, or more until results are clear. And a lot of the "gassy" stuff comes AFTER the first.

I could be totally wrong though, everyone is different. Just making a hunch. I've never used Epsom salt, I just use baking soda most of the time. Occasionally I'm given soap by a friend. I've had coffee enemas too (I'm thinking about doing coffee here at home more often now), but it's been a while.

Anyway, speaking for myself personally - if I was feeling gassy a few hours after I had some enemas, my first thought would be to get on the toilet to see if anything was forthcoming again and then take another enema, if possible.

I went back to a saline enema and the bloated gassy problems went away.
