Beccarn,
I read and appreciate the comments you made regarding rectal temperature taking, but I will admit, despite personally being an advocate of the RT procedure at least for myself as an adult, I find it somewhat difficult to fathom any facility these days (though I could be very much mistaken) where this practice is routinely carried out, particularly with respect to the patients and their age grouping you mention. I sort of follow the logic regarding the route used, and its effect on the reading, and the factors contributing to it, but what caught my attention was your comment(s) regarding the explanation(s) to female patients with the option, if you will, as to whether they would want their temperatures taken rectally or elsewhere (vaginally)-but is that route usually used for well/sick visits? Rectal, yes I can understand. Vaginally, I can't, at least not for a sick visit, and even a wellness check up.
And in light of recent events re: a doctor just sentenced to a very long prison term; is there a possibility that the practice of rectal temperatures, particularly for females, might stop or have much more scrutiny and or supervision put in place? And is it your facilities' directive/protocol to determine body temperatures on your patients, rectally?
If your patients show up with parent(s)/guardian, and you advise of the need or preference as per your facility, a rectal reading, are they present when it is done, or are they asked to leave until that or the exam is completed?
Thanks.
