Any of you that are machinists can likely understand this. the name Starrett has been synonymous with precision measuring instruments since 1878. stamped on the tools is "Athol, Mass." [there is also a Athol, Idaho] so i always wondered how people that live in that town speak to each other, do they walk into a restaurant and greet everyone by saying "good morning to all you Athols"? if i went to either of these tows looking for a old friend do i say "i'm looking for a particular Athol"? there are endless possibilities.

Yes I was a skilled machinist and owned many Starrett tools.

And then; just to finish off, there's a place called Cockermouth, I kid you not!

On a recent road trip we happened upon the small town of Hooker, Oklahoma (1800 population) in the Oklahoma Panhandle. They have used their name to advantage. The Chamber of Commerce says it's "a location, not a vocation". There is a gift shop that sells t-shirts, coffee cups, refrigerator magnets, and other things which use the town's name in various humorous ways. They say some folks even travel out of their way to come to the gift shop.

A year or two ago my wife and I were traveling through what is known as Southern Tier, NY. We saw the sign of the town of Big Flats and my wife flashed a boob at me saying that she would not qualify to live there. I almost drove off the highway.
