How long can I leave a catheter in before I should expect some incontinence?

The longest I've left my 14fr connected to a legbag was overnight(didn't tell my wife), everything else is less than an hour or just to orgasm.

It burns like the devil when I remove it, so it would be nice to just leave it in for a few days,

It depends a bit on the catheter... Incontinence is normally not occuring before several days...

However, the longer you leave your catheter in place, the higher is the risk of infoection... Therefore, if you place a catheter for a longer period, be careful when cleaning, and use sterile gloves and lubricant...

It happens sometimes that urining becomes painful for a day or two after leaving the catheter for longer period...

About the cathter removal, I try to remove it by pulling it the fastest as possible to reduce pain...

The cath shouldn't be dry to the point of causing pain on removal. Try peeing around the cath to get some lubricity before withdrawing. Don't force any urine out if the fit is too tight. Another idea is to try a different brand of cath....some are more lubrous than others and you can generally tell by their relative price.

DO NOT PULL IT OUT FAST. That is completely wrong and will cause more irritation and bleeding than a slow smooth removal. PLUS, IF THE BALLOON SNAGS AND YOU PULL IT FAST, YOU CAN DO SEVERE DAMAGE TO YOUR URETHRAL SPHINCTER AND YOU COULD BE INCONTINENT FOR LIFE.

I hope you are only using a 14FR catheter because too large a catheter can cause it to be tight on removal which can easily cause BLEEDING.

It sounds like you need a lot of instruction on this before you play with catheters any further. YOU WILL INJURE OR INFECT YOURSELF.

The longer you leave a catheter in, and the more insertions you make, THE HIGHER THE RISK OF INFECTION.

You misundertood, You should pull out slowly for the first centimeters... However, you can be faster for the last 10 cm...

About infection, one thing is clear: You need to learn the proper way of inserting it without contamination.

About size of catheter: One more time you are wrong!!! This depends on the person and a too narrow catheter can create even more infection!!! The standard catheter size for a male is 18 not 14... wich can create a risk of urine leakage around the catheter!

I know perfectly what I am doing since I am prefessionally responsible of inserting and taking care of catheter in an ICU unit.

If you are very sensitive, I would suggest trying using more libricant or trying a silicone catheter which are recommended for long term catheterisation!

(2) You said pull it fast, you didn't say for what distance and it appears you have now changed your tune. (3) Finally, more play docs get into trouble with catheters that are too large than too small. Play docs and play patients should not have indwelling catheters. A couple of hours is more than enough before they get into trouble.

I enjoy inseerting a catheter into my sub then making her drink several bottles of water. Fun to watch her bed for me to release the clamp I applied to the catheter to empty her bladder. I usually only leave it in for a short while, I am actually looking to give her the burning effect of the removal. She actually craves that sensation.

Watch out for the burning. That means the epitheiium is irritated, and irritated epithelium is more easily infected than non-irritated sites.

What do you mean by a cath being 'too big'? If it will fit down into the bladder (obviously without forcing it in) what will 'too big' mean? I have had several different size caths used on me before and I really prefer the bigger ones. The opening at the tip of penis determines the largest size that will fit. Once past that there never seems to be a problem with fit into my bladder. I'm just curious. Not something I've done a lot of...

That is not correct. The urethral orifice and the navicular fossa, which is the dilated end of the urethra is wider than the rest of the urethra, and there is a constriction at the proximal (more inside) part of the fossa that you will irritate or tear if you push too hard with a catheter or sound. The end 1-1.5 cm is wider then the rest of the urethra..

I would not go so far as to say impossible, but it is very, very unusual. Almost all the real clients I cathed were already incontinent, so that is not a factor. The folks, including me, I've play cathed have never suffered any ill effects, including infection. I am very careful to maintain clean standards and do the procedure with an absolute minimum of handling and fiddling around. That is the way I was taught and it works.

Hello to all I want to just say several things about catheters. This is from my own experience after a back injury. I was unable to void and made a trip to the emergency room as when you can not go you can not go. They placed a 18fr catheter in and got 1200cc out. Yes I had to go but nothing I tried would work. They sent me home with the catheter in place. With a follow up appointment with a urologist five days later. Hey just moving around with it in was a adventure. He performed some Tests scope in bladder. And filling the bladder. Result nerve damage to the sphincter or bladder or both. I was shown how to perform and internment catheterize myself. This was every time I had to go 4 to 6 times day. And the insurance company waned me to reuse the catheter. They said cheaper to treat the infections than buy catheters. I beat them on that one. Long of the story after doing this for a year and a half. I never not once had a infection. I did follow sterile field the way they showed me. But when you stop at joeys gas station it is hard to do. Once in the hospital they left a Foley in for seven days. I never experienced incontinence. But that is just my experience. I now have a sacral nerve stimulator that jumps the damaged nerve. So no more need to use a catheter.

Hi! I like catheter play, I use 18 or 20Fr silicone Foley catheter. Once, I was for three days with a 18Fr, and I have no problems, I got out, went to work... and so on. Many times I´ve been catheterized for one day or one day and half. I take care of good cleaning. I´ve never had, until now, any UTI.

Do you wear a leg-bag or belly-pouch? Is your job active in that you have to empty often to avoid a protrution of the urine bag, or does it now show in your case?

How did you UTI affect you? Pain in the bladder or the "gotta go's"?

I've bypassed the anti-reflux valve a few times so that urine will flow back up the catheter -- if you leave about 1/2 of the bag filled with air, when you sit down you'll feel air moving around/bubbling in the bladder. -- Just something for short-term, but wow, neat feeling.

It will make your bladder "noisy" if you're trying to keep it a secret 😃

Sometimes I wear a leg bag, sometimes doesn´t. In this case I put some kind of valve I can open or close at my wish: When needed I go to the toilet, open my crotch take out the tube and open the valve, nice and clean!. I never had UTI, so no pain nor gotta go´s. Excuse my English, but what you are meaning with "a protution of the urine bag"

What caused the nerve damage? I hope it wasn't from the catheter.

It depends on the size of the catheter, the time it is kept in and the person.

After 3 days with a number 24 or higher. I was incontinent for a day or so. After that all functions were back to normal.

When I use a number 16 for 5 days, the incontinence does not occur at all.

Any suggestions to wean from catheter use?

I have been wearing Silastic 16fr foleys for a few months off&on, but now wear always because I must.. the urge to urinate is unbearable if I don't have the balloon inserted. Any suggestions on weaning? I could wear a diaper for a while, I would prefer to continue with a belly-bag & the catheter if it's going to be diapers.

Ideas welcome.

p.s. -- I have gathered from experience that keeping the urethra lubricated and covered at the tip with "Saran wrap" really helps keep down irritation on the long-term

First, are you certain that you do not have a lingering, chronic infection giving you the constant urge to urinate? and do you have the URGE or do you actually urinate when you have the sensation?

Second, you should do kegel exercises with the catheter out to strengthen your muscles.

Third, On days off from work, try going without the catheter.

Fourth, have you tried an "external" catheter or a smaller Fr size catheter?

There are other combinations of these things you could try.

I find after a catheter removal be it for several hours or days of a foley being in place i find that i have that urge to go for a short while but it does pass and i go back to normal ps i drink loads of water to keep flushing to prevent uti about 4lt a day

First, I would go see a urologist and bare your soul. I expect he or she will be very understanding and non-judgmental. There may be an underlying infection or other medical problem.

Second, it is possible that your bladder may have atrophied or shrunk from being constantly drained by a catheter. This may be the case if you are actually passing urine when you feel the urge. If this is so, it may be necessary to stretch the bladder and build capacity again. Probably the best way to do this is to clamp your catheter off until the urge builds and then open it to drain the bladder. It would be a good idea to measure the output from each voiding to monitor capacity. It may also be worth recording time between voids.

I'll second the suggestion to use an "external catheter." You can urinate all you want, into the same leg bag. I use an external catheter when I don't use a Foley catheter. The most popular ones are molded rubber or silicone self-adhesive types. Sizing is important. Measure the diameter and length of the flaccid penis. If you only have an inch of shaft length behind the glans it's going to be hard. There are special shorties namely the "Sport Sheath" The diameter goes with the size. There are instructions at the Rochester Medical, and other manufacturer web sites. I use a re-usable vinly Uro-Sheath, held on by a rubber strap. I can use it for 2 months at a time, almost full time. I use it with a leg bag walking or in bed with an extension tube and 2 liter bed bag.

Let me know how this goes because I'm kinda interested in wearing a catheter full time but don't want this to happen

I too wear a 16fr/30cc Silastic, and have been wearing for years without irritation, that's the nice part about the silicone coating ! They are defiantly more expensive,but worth it.

I do switch to diapers from time to time to give my ladder a break, but mostly it's catheter and belly bag.

Someone on another post said 10cc for tong term and 30cc for short term use, I disagree, 5cc feel like they want to push out causing spasms but the 30 cc is like trying to put a grapefruit through a garden hose, no pressure.

I have played with catheters a number of times. I usually use a 14 fr and it has not caused any incontinence on removal even after a week. I have used 18 fr and larger ones that did cause some incontinence for a few days after removal. Although nerve racking not knowing how long it would last, it was nice to feel my urine leak into my diaper with no control.

I rarely cath myself and have only done it in play circumstances. Before starting to play with them I read up as much as possible and have not experienced any problem. I have use 18 and 20fr Foleys. I leave them in for a few hours. The only thing I have noticed is that it seems after removal, the slightest ingestion of liquid makes me feel as if I have go "go" , probably because the bladder has been kept shrunken for a few hours. I have also very very carefully masturbated with the cath in while having the cath shut so the blasser is kind of ful. Just as I begin to orgasm from " carefully " masturbating myself I open the cath so I urinate at the same time I am having orgasm. WoW thats a great experience.

A few times while doing the above 2 things I also retained a 1qt enema with a but plug holding it in. After orgasm and urinating at the same time, as I started to relax, the but plug shot out of my rectum and the retained enema shot out of my rear. It was as close as possible to experiencing all three sensations of relief at the same time ! Incredible !

AFter few 7 month with a cath in mostly all the time (16FR or 18FR), I can't notice any dysfunction while not cathed. The only fact is that I've more urge to go during the few hours after removal. After that, all revert back as usual. I think that involving incontinence by using a cath, even for long period, is a myth.

I had a cath in for about an hour and then it was removed. It did sting moderately when removed. Had a slight burning sensation for the next 2 - 3 times urinating after the catheter was removed and then all was well.

I have a 28fr cath in now and going leave it for 3 hrs. It went in real smooth as I have been stretching for awhile. I have worn 22fr cath for over 12 hrs a day over serval days and have not seen any problems. With the larger cath you don't get a movement of the cath as much. Feels just great.

I too use catheters with my diapers i use 16fr up to a 20. i will leave A 16 in for 24 hrs then after the 24hrs will leave them out but still will have my diapers on. then then day after i will put in the 18 wear for 24 then a day without then the 20. i have done this for the past years with no effects.
