How are you asked to undress?

What phrases does the nurse (or whoever preps you for your doctor's visit) use when you're being asked to undress before an exam?

The last time I went to my current doctor, the nurse handed me the gown and said: "And we have this very stylish gown for you, so if you could go ahead and put that on, he'll be in shortly."

The nurses at my pediatrician's office each had their own way of saying it:

There was the one that was there since I can remember (and is probably still there) : "Everything off but the underpants."

or, to my mom until I started going by myself: "Have him take off everything but his underpants."

A young, clearly nervous new nurse: "Go ahead and take off your shirt, and he'll be in in a few minutes."

This was unusual since I was always examined in underwear, so I asked "I only have to take off my shirt?" and she responded "Well... I mean, your pants too. You gotta be in your underwear for him."

And my favorite, at my very last visit there: "Please remove any shirts, undershirts, tank tops, pants, shorts, boxers, and socks, and the doctor will be in shortly."

I tell my patients to strip to just their undershorts and I'll be back in a minute. I say "undershorts" so they don't leave their undershirt or socks on.

I have been told to "take off everything but your underwear", "take off everything including your underwear and put this gown on", and "take off everything except your underwear and put the gown on". I generally don't use a gown for my patients, for males its "take off everything except your underwear", which I then remove at that point during the exam saying "take off your underwear, please". For female, I say "take off everything except your bra and panties", which I also remove during the exam.

I am usually told to "get undressed down to your underpants" and then during the examination I am asked "If you would like to slip off you underpants" - I usually answer (in my head) "try and stop me!" ;-)

I was told to take off all my clothes and put on this gown.

For my regular physical its "Take everything off and lay your clothes on this chair and here is your paper gown" for my skin doctor it is "Everything off but your underwear".

Growing up... plenty of sprots physicals... Always "Please take everything off except your underwear...."

For the regular doctor its, "Undress to your shorts, I'll be right back,"

The dermatologist's nurse says, "Everything off, the gown is on the table and opens in the back. Don't bother tying it. I'll be back with the doctor."

No one has been told, "Strip naked?" One of my first docs didn't mince words by giving me details about taking off my clothes. I was too scared to worry about it then..........

A urologist one told me to "drop your trousers and underpants to your ankles please. Lean on the exam table on your forearms.... This is what they used to call the "Welcome to the Army Exam", try to relax" That was my first prostate exam when I was younger... didn't need one for 5 or so years after that when I hit 40yrs old....

For me as a kid it was, take everything off but your underpants. Then as I got older and was by myself it was- the nurse as she was leaving handed me the gown and said everything down to your underwear, on occasion it was : strip to your undershorts. Once during a new doctor I was seeing (changed doctors) physical the nurse didn't say a thing she just pulled out the sheet and put it on the exam table & basically indicated to me with her hands as if I knew what to do.

So I just stripped naked but my socks and draped the sheet over me on the edge of the table. When the doctor came in he seemed kind of shocked as I had my underwear laid on top of my jeans (he glanced tried not for me to notice it) he just said oh.. would you like the gown too if I was getting cold with just the sheet on. .I told him nope. I'm not bashfull and said its all going to fall off anyway.

He went on from there with no issues on the next visits when I stripped all the time. I did test it once and just stripped to my underwear and left the sheet aside untouched. Seemed to keep the openess with him and no barriers to keep from a thorough exam. Those were the days, not so much now. I don't go in now as much as I used to.

It was always take everything off but your undies for the doctor be a good boy and do it please

First time with my current doctor, he met me fully clothed, and asked me to undress and put on a gown, but said I could leave my underwear on. I was sort of bummed, but went back to him next year and because I was a current patient he didn't meet me first. The assistant said "everything off today, including your underwear, and the gown opens in the back." Yes!

From that point on, it's been pretty much the same. They always make a point of saying that the underwear needs to come off. And I think, yes, yes it does!

My current doctor - the recepionist calls me back and says, "Everything off but your underwear and the doctor will be in in a minute". He then comes in and does the questions with me in my underwear.

About halfway through the exam he just says "For this next part I need your underwear off". Rest of the exam I am nude. It is professional, but I am nude.

My current doctor tells me to "strip to your shorts" and doesn't leave the room while I strip down. Other doctors or their nurses have told me to "undress completely and put on the gown with the opening at the back." I had one doctor who was very explicit about "take everything off including your underwear and put on this gown." I also had one doctor who told "undress to your underpants and put on this gown."

I never go to the same doctor because I only have exams which are required by an employer or an insurance company, so the experiences vary a little. Generally, my exams have started with me in my undershorts. Almost always I am instructed by an assistant--always female--to "strip down to your shorts." I find this really degrading and a great start to what is always a humiliating experience.

"Please undress down to your underpants and have a seat on the table, the doctor will be with you shortly."

The nurse says "Take everything off, put the gown on opening in the back, and the drape over your lap. The doctor will be in with you shortly."

Nurse brings me to the exam room and closes the door. A few minutes later my doctor comes in and says "take everything off but ok to leave on socks and underwear" and he leaves to give me time to undress. So I take it all off as instructed. Since I don't wear underwear...I am technically complying. I did take off my pants. I am sitting there naked when doc re-enters the room. He sees me naked and has said one of two things over the past few years: "if you don't have underwear on you could have left your pants on" which I reply "why? You're going to look anyway" -or- he remembers once he walks in and sees me naked so he rolls his eyes and says "oh yeah now I remember you do your physical naked" and he locks the door so that "the nurse doesn't walk in unexpectedly".

After BP and weight the nurse asks, "Please take off all of your clothes but you can leave your underwear on. The doctor will be in shortly"

When I see my playdoc, he hands me a new, disposable gown, says "Here's a gown, everything off, put that on, I'll leave you to get ready and I'll be back in a few minutes."

Brian0763NJ, it sounds like you have a very respectful and understanding doctor. He's willing to go along with your likes and dislikes regarding the gown and he takes measures to ensure your privacy. Bravo for him.

When it came time from the DRE the doctor told me to "pull down your underwear"

I remember once when I was a child, I think I was around 9 or 10, the nurse told my mother to "Strip him down to his underpants" that phrase I remember like it was yesterday as it all sounded so blunt, caught me by surprise and made me feel like I was about to be attacked.

The dermatology nurse, after taking my vitals, tells me to undress completely and put on the gown with the opening in the back. She (usually) leaves the room then, and I wait for the dermatoloty doctor to enter.

Now as an adult when I go for a physical, the nurse says take everything off down to your boxers and put on this gown that everyone hates"

When I was a young boy, the doctor I went to would meet me and my mother in the hall; he would direct us into an exam room and tell me, "Strip to your shorts." (My last exam with him was by myself.) After that, most of the doctors I had physicals from just had me take off my shirt, although most of those physicals did include a genital exam.

Then about fifteen years ago, I did have an older doctor who was more "old school" in his approach to physicals. The nurse had some sort of European accent (German, I think) and she would say, "Everything off except underwear." The doctor would examine me in just my shorts and then always had me take my shorts off completely for the genital and rectal exam--he was the only doctor I ever had that wanted me completely nude for that part of the physical. The last exam I had with him before he retired, I stripped completely naked right off the bat and had the whole exam in the nude.

The funny this is, my real doctor usually doesn't have me undress. Most of the exam is conducted with my clothes on. Nor does he actually ask me to drop my pants for a testicular exam or DRE. He just says, "Okay, I'm going to check you for a hernia. I need you to stand here." Or, "Let's do your prostate exam. It's easiest if you lean over the table." I guess he just assumes I know what's required for those exams, and of course he's right.

Hmm... I wonder if he's ever had a clueless patient bend over the table with their pants ON? That would be funny.

Last time I went for an exam the nurse said, "Ok, let's get you in a gown." She opened the drawer and pulled out a cloth gown and laid it on the exam table. She said, "Ok, I need you to take everything off and put the gown on with the opening in the back." She then started to leave the room and as she was opening the door to the hallway she turned back around and said, "oh, you can leave your socks on." I think it was her way of saying, yes, the underwear needs to come off as well.

I was usually told "Ok, I need you to take your shirt and your bra off" & was handed a paper gown. Pants came off later so I'm not sure why I wasn't asked to remove them initially.
