Description of Exam in France from Book

I found this short description of how an ultrasound was done on the writer´s wife in Paris. It is taken from the book ´Paris to the Moon´ by Adam Gopnik, a writer for the New Yorker, who describes his time living in Paris from 1995 to 2000. He was a native New Yorker who went to live in Paris, therefore the book has many comparisons of ow things differ between the two cities and countries.

Here is a quote, His wife is pregnant and together both went ´to a clinic for a first ultrasound:

...´The he asked Margaret to get undressed. There was, to my surprise, no changing room or even a curtain, so she did., like that. (I was the only embarrassed person in the room.) The elaborate hospital rigamarole of American hygiene and American obstetrics - the white coats, the dressing rooms, the lab gowns - is dispensed with. They make no sense, since a pregnant woman is not only not sick, but in a sense has doubled the sum of her health.
