How to choose the right speculum

Can anyone give me some pointers on what is the appropriate method for choosing the right speculum for the exam?

The entrance of vagina has not the same size in all women (childrens or not and even virgin of course) so, first, look toroughly this entrance opening it with the end of two fingers

Then try with a not too large speculum and, if you can't see the cervix try again with a larger one

Don't forget than, on a women lying on her back, the vagina is oblique to the bottom and the low so insert the speculum in the same direction

Don't forget than anterior wall of the vagina (up in this position) is very sensitive

so push with the speculum on the posterior (down) wall

^^^^ That really isn't true. What you said is analogous to saying tall men have a long penis and short men have a short penis.

There is not any correlation between size of a woman an size of her vagina !

I think Glove is talking about deciding once you've explored a woman's vagina, if she has a short vagina, you don't want the largest speculum you have! He may have been thinking about a woman's stature, in which case, Switchablesusie and the others here are most certainly right!

My girlfriend is just under 5'5" and yet she has quite the large vagina! If she's aroused and relaxed, she will accept my largest speculum quite easily!

In the US we have only really two kinds- graves and peterson. A peterson is the same size all along the blades and a graves is wider at the end of the blades. I try to use a peterson as much as I can. I also mark on there chart (on the inside cover) what I used last time that worked well.

In europa, Grave and Pederson have respectively the name of Cusco and Collins !

Collins is easier to use but can't be removed to do intra-uterine procedures ( as HysterosSalpingoGraphy) Different usr- different speculum !!!

I thought a collins speculum opened sideways, while a graves or pederson speculum opened vertically?

In my experizence, both types of speculum are introduced vertically in the vagina but are both used horizontally to view the cervix and, if necessary, to "work" on it

^^^^ Somewhat. The size of the vagina after birth is dependent on the amount of stretching of the birth canal, the number of births, and how tightly the suturing is done after the episiotomy. Some stupid (bastard) OB's will "do the woman and her husband a favor" and suture her tightly. This can be VERY bad. Reducing the size of the vagina right after a birth (in contrast to a vaginoplasty) can lead to severe complications like dyspareunia and the need for additional reconstructive surgery after subsequent births.

I examined many woman's with have one or more births, but they are not more wide than woman they haves no births.

How the girl are feeling at the moment at the exam, are they relax or scared, that is the point.

Or they have a painfull exam(s) before.

In most women the vagina is capable of stretching to accommodate a large speculum. However, do you need a large opening to view the cervix. In most women you do not.
