If you are new to estim, the best advice is to experiment on yourself first. Get to know what different signals feel like and understand that what you feel may be different than what your patient is feeling. Done right you shouldn't have any sharp, stinging or burning feelings. Those are all symptoms of not enough surface area or poor contact with the electrodes.

I think it's interesting that there are some theories about what kind of pulse patterns work well. I've never tried that since I prefer the pre-recorded variable rhythms of the ET-312, rather than some constant pattern that medical TENS units produce

Nevertheless, if you're thinking of writing your own rhythms (you can do this on a PC for an ET-312), you might want to keep such rules in mind in constructing your own little symphony.

I learned at smartstim.com that you should always try estim things on yourself first, before you try them on others, so you understand what's happening, and what the limits may be. I found that to be very good advice. When I first started with estim on a female volunteer, I soon realized how llittle I understood about what she might be feeling.
