Catheterized in Hospital, Catheter In to Go Home

I went to emergency room this morning due to severe urinary retention, and a foley catheter was inserted into me. The doctor wanted to be sure that there was no leakage, so he used a 18 fr catheter, which is slightly bigger than I am used to. The insertion did sting a bit, but was a painless as possible. Within a matter of minutes, 2200 mL was drained from my bladder. The relief felt great as I was nearly ready to pass out from the pain when I arrived at the hospital.

Unfortunately due to how expanded my bladder was, I experienced a great deal of spasms, which were extremely painful.

The ER doctor decided to refer me to a urologist. The urologist recommended that in order to allow my bladder to relax, I should keep the foley in until I could get an appointment at his office. They changed me to a leg bag and I was discharged with the foley. I wore pretty short gym shorts into the ER as I pretty much went there right after waking up, so there was really no way to hide the leg bag as I excited the hospital. My friend who picked up instantly noticed the bag.

Although I have had catheters many times in the hospital before, and even had a leg bag, this is the first time that I have left the hospital with a foley still inserted for over 24 hours. Typically, I have just gone to outpatient the next day for removal. Luckily, the spasms are beginning to end, but needless to say this will be quite an adventure. I plan on taking photos later, which I will upload to the site, as this is my first catheter adventure! It's pretty exciting, and my appointment isn't until Tuesday, so I get to spend roughly a week with the foley.

It is it a bad idea to masturbate with the catheter in? because I am slightly aroused by it, and have always wanted to try this.

Any tips for comfort, or any tips in general from frequent catheter users?

I was only given the leg bag, no night drainage bag, so I think I may go pick one up, otherwise I will have to keep getting up all night to empty the bag.

I've been sent home with foleys from the the ER for this a few times in the past... Comfort level is really going to be dependent on what type & size of foley they used(18fr really is more comfortable than a 14fr)

and kind of leg bag they gave you. the biggest issue (besides the spasms) is walking around with a leg bag, after it starts to fill with urine it starts sliding down your leg and pulling on your cath. I strongly recommend some paper tape or something of the like to hold your cath in place(leave PLENTY OF SLACK) so that once your bag does get full it will not hurt... with regards to masturbation, I've done it and it feels like no other orgasm i've had(borderline painful). but afterward the catheter seems VERY irritating and you will find your self trying to pull it out... Otherwise I recommend briefs over boxers because they tend to hold things in place better.

For extra comfort, you can put a small dab of over-the-counter cortisone cream right where the catheter exits your body. It will provide some extra lubrication and will keep you from getting irritated by the catheter. The cortisone cream will not degrade either silicone or latex catheters.

A large cath is better than a small one. I can wear a 22fr all day without a problems but once I had to have one for real. It was 16fr and it cause a lot of problems with rubing a lot and spams. Try using a belly bag instead of a leg bag. I find the belly bag is a whole lot better .

Great pics ! I agree with Tubeman the belly bag is the way to go, but they are rather expensive...

I have also found that a larger catheter tends to produce a bit more discomfort during insertion, but is much more comfortable over the long term because there is less movement of the catheter in the urethra. It is also less traumatic to the urethral meatus (the opening) because it spreads the stress of the catheter over a wider area. As a rough analogy, think about how easily cheese cutters cut with a fine wire, if the wire was as think as a pencil, it would not cut.

I have gone home with a cath in from the hospital, have never tried the belly bag alway given the leg bag. The belly bag looks like a better option so that it not hanging on the leg. Any problems with drainage?

I haven't had a problems with drainage. If you sit for a longtime the tube might get pinch but as soon as you stand up it flows ok.

I have only been cathed in the hospital for surgery and once in the emergency room after out patient surgery when the anestetic prevented me from being able to empty my bladder. I was in a lot of distress at the time and very embarassed. This was the first and only time I have been cathed while awake. My wife was with me and the nurse was female and not too gentle.

I have played with my own caths had some bleeding but it was my fault not enough lube. I would not ejaculate I did it once lot of pressure not that much fun. I found really small caths like for kids felt the best when ejaculating FR8-10 I could move it in and out as i was ejaculating I didn't feel the pressure like the 14.

I am a male. About 8 years ago, I was Foley catheterized post surgery. They removed the Foley catheter after about 8 days. But, I was having temporary mental problems and was not emptying my bladder enough. They put the Foley catheter back in, but the nurse failed to use the "assist". The "assist" is a strong tape that adheres to the abdomen and immobilizes the catheter. From that point on, any kind of movement was excruciating. Even moving my legs and especially walking around in the halls for exercise, I could feel the catheter moving around in my penis and all the way up to the bladder. I couldn't wait for them to remove it. Afterwards, I fantasized about the procedure, A year ago, they catheterized me for another surgery. I told them to not use the "assist". Just as before, movement was excruciating. They next day, the sensation was even stronger. I started having bladder spasms. This is like an extreme urge to urinate for about 30 seconds. All I could do was moan. Finally, I got a migraine that was 9.5 (from 1 to 10). They gave me a shot of Dilaudid 2 mg. Within a minute, I felt this huge wave of relaxation come over me and I fell asleep. When I woke up, the migraine was completely gone. However, the bladder spasms continued and they had to remove the catheter. When I actually had the surgery a number of days later, they used another catheter while I was anesthetized during surgery. When I woke up after this second catheter, they had it immobilized with the "assist". I had no problems at all. Conclusion: The hospital told me the "assist" was used to prevent the accidental expulsion of the Foley catheter. That might be true in some cases but, at least with males, the real reason is to prevent excruciating sensations.

I have masturbated with a catheter in me. I wear a FR-30 and I have now fount it all that great. Yes I could cum, some get an extreme orgasm, for me it was not that big of a deal. I liked masturbation without a catheter. I asked my urologist's nurse if I could or should masturbate, she checked with the Dr. and said it wasn't a good idea to do that. I did it anyway. I didn't see a great difference.

The only way to know is to do it.

A Fr 30 is a huge size for a male urinary catheter. The normal size used is Fr 14 or Fr 16. If your urethra takes something about 1cm in diameter there is something very strange going on.

First I started out with a FR-18, that size was useless. It was like having "fish tank tubing" in me. I got no relief from peeing my pants. I then went to FR-20, FR-22, FR-24, they offered about 10 % success over a FR-18 and were just about as useless. Then I went to a FR-26, then FR-28. A FR-28 was better than the others, but only a gain of about 25 % success rate.. I finally went to a FR-30 and it was very good. On some occasions I would get some leakage, but a success rate of close to 90 %.

I was going through 2 to 4 Depends a day, with a catheter I didn't need them at all. I got most of my catheters online from Allegro, no scripts and very quick shipping.

When I started to use a catheter, I had seen my urologist, he was not fond of catheters, but at the time didn't offer any solution. He did run a scope into my bladder, I could watch it on the screen with him. He was looking for any damage of me having a kidney stone when I had some blood in my urine. He looked at my prostate and everything else. He said I looked good for an old man. He asked if I had any prostate issues, I said it still worked.

Later when I decided I had had enough of washing out my pants, cleaning up after my bladder voided, all without any warning. I would get the "I gotta go alert" I would head to the bathroom and before I would get there, about 14 to 16 feet, I would have a mess on me and the floor. I then had to wash me up, then clean the floor. I got tired of that.

I then called my urologist, I got his nurse, I asked what I should do and not do with a catheter. She went over all the dos and don'ts. I then called back and asked about masturbation, she didn't know the answer, but checked with the Dr. He didn't advise it.

I asked about showering with a catheter, she said it was fine. No swimming, no hot tub, no swimming in the lake, pond and no baths. She said they change catheters every 30 days and that I could wear it that long before changing it out for a new one. She did say to make sure my penis was clean and that at the first sign of a UTI to call the office.

I then called to get a script for catheters, she asked lots of questions and I told her what I was using, a FR-30, he gave me a script for that size catheter. Later I called about my overactive bladder, they arranged an appt. Covid hit and all office visits were called off. they would set up a phone call with the Dr. about my overactive bladder. The nurse asked lots of questions, I told her I had a catheter in me and it was nice not to have to clean up all the time. The Dr. then came on the phone asked more questions, I told him I had a catheter in me at the time, a FR-30 and he said OK. We went over again all the options, chemical treatment,( which for me was useless) I tried 3 different medications, even Mybetric, which was only a slight improvement, but gave me a constant 24/7 headache. I Don't get Headaches. On rare occasions I will get one. He doesn't do botox injections which we both agreed was probably the best path to go.

So I went to see the urologist that does them, he laid out all the options again, nerve stimulation at the ankle, botox and the implant which I didn't think was all that great of an option. As soon as they do their home work on my insurance co. and if they will pay for it, I will have it done. I asked if I could again wear a catheter, he said yes.

So my urologist and another urologist both know I have a catheter in me, it is for me the best alternative for now.

Yes a FR-30 is large, it does stop me from wetting my pants and I feel much better now. Even my wife who doesn't want or care to have sex anymore says I am happier wearing a catheter.

For 90 days I had a catheter in me, since I was going to see the urologist, not knowing what they would do, I removed it. For a week I went through lots of depends, I used to be able to wear a pair and change them every other day. Now it is twice a day every day. When I wear a catheter I don't have to worry about leaks, cleaning the floor, or anything else. One pair of Depends every other day is fine because there is hardly any leakage.

I am sure that if there was something wrong, my urologist would have me come in for a look, see and make sure there was no real problem. If I thought there was a major problem, I would be in the office ASAP.
