Bad experiences with catheter

Was wondering if anyone has had problems or bad experances with getting them?

Urological supplies and catheters are available in Canada on a retail level without a script or prescription so I have never had any problem getting them. The shops are staffed mostly by retired nurses who are always friendly and helpful, and as a result it has always been a good experience.

I want to play but I can't find anyone who knows and is open to do that kinda stuff. It's no fun to play alone!

Catheters and kits are available on-line. Medical supply houses like Allegro have shipped to me without any problem.

I recommend getting the kits, especially for foleys. And always use a new catheter. It is impossible to sterilize one at home without risk.

Straight caths can be used without a kit if you get one-use KY packets, and wash around the meatus (the pee hole) with a bacteriocidal soap and then betadine. Always wear a new pair of sterile gloves.

I love the feeling of a catheter going in, but wouldn't want an infection. If it hurts to pee after a day, you need to see a doctor! Bladder infections can be life threatening! Play safe.

I have bought them from local supply store I don't think it requires a script or they didn't ask. I found them to be a lot cheaper online you can even get samples. I figure if you went to a drug store they would want a script if they even had them. Make sure you use enough lube I caused some bleeding which dripped for about an hour from not using enough. I later injected lube in first that helped a lot.

Yes online is the best like allergo etc. Always use a new one, I have no idea why something like this would need a perscript. Good luck.

I've ordered catheters from Best Medical Supply without problems.User friendly website. Ordered on line with a credit card without a prescription. Prices seemed reasonable, fast shipping, discreet packaging.

If you are in the northeast (US) I would suggest Moore Medical, they ship quickly and have good prices.

I've bought caths from two stores locally, as no prescription is required here. Everyone I dealt with was extremely friendly and helpful...a few business I regularly deal with could take a lesson from them! It has always been a good experience for me.

I get my caths form alegro medical or my monthly supply form our medical supplier that does my diapers they send me crappy latex so i have a stash of nice silicon ones i actually have several wrings sizes from over the years i might be getting rid of

I've been ordering from Allegro for years.. Just found a place called quality medical supplies and I think I'll test them out for my next order being they have some Dover kits I've been wanting to try

I use Amazon. Fast shipping and great prices. They also have lots of other medical devices for sale which are always fun to add to the order.

Allegro is great. i've had varied luck getting them from the local supply stores. most of them have told me I needed a script.

I have a medical supply shop a mile from my home so it's a quick trip up Dixie Highway for me. 😃

I have ordered from Allegro with good results, rapid service and I got what I ordered at a good price, no questions asked. For other play catheters I also get a few from local "play" shops which irregularly have them in small quantities and reduced selection of sizes.

I have never understood the logic of Allegro shipping. I, too, have had one item in a huge box. Sometimes things come from 3 different places and at least 3 trips by the delivery service. FedEx and others.

I have had one catheter in a box like the 15 x 15 x 7. Sometimes it is 2 catheters.

Just boggles my mind.

If it's not in right or the bag is done wrong or there's the pressure is wrong you can feel like a vacuum cleaner sucking piss out of you

I really enjoy catheter play, unfortunately I will have to stop. Twice now I have ended up with a really bad UTI infection. I take great care to make sure everything is sterile…alcohol wipes, etc. The antibiotic I’m on even lists “catheter use” as one of the causes. I’ve decided that it’s just not worth the risk.

With getting them , no . That has been Very well taken care of by Xmedicial .

All my problems have been caused by incompetent or needlessly hurtful nurses . O.K. My problem , unique to me is extremely large amount of bladder debrie And large amount of blood clots being passed . Any catheter smaller then 24fr gets plugged up , A plugged up catheter or drain hose , {yes I have plugged them up as well } causes me so much pain It can and has left me in a ball , laying on the floor .

First nurse that changed my catheter took out my 24fr and told me , In no uncertain terms that she will only put in a 16fr , Thats It , DO NOT QUESTAION HER . I was in the E.R. two days later where they changed me out to 24fr and flushed out so much blood and chucks of my insides I was worried if I would recover . Add to that I had a U.T.I. from my last change .' By that nurse '. My second nurse was sent by a home health care Co. She had no idea how and had to be trained by me how to change a catheter . She was doing well until I caught her steeling from me . I had her fired and replaced . My third nurse …., was so rough … She would deflate the balloon then pull so hard on the catheter my hips would leave the bed . She would then shove the new one in so hard and fast I was almost screaming . , She didn't make sure it was all the way in before inflating the balloon . From time of start to her out the door was maybe 10 min' . For the next day or two I would pass bloody bits and pieces . And they hurt when they plug up the catheter . She was in charge of my catheter changes for 5 months . In that time she had torn me up so much inside that my urologist moved me up to a 26fr and 30cc balloon that had to be inflated to 45cc's {remember she didn't make sure it was all the way in before inflating?? } I finely got fed up . I fired all my home care nurses . Even though I'm partly paralyzed from the chest down and need help to even dress myself ,,,, I will do it for myself for now on . My last two catheter changes ,,, I did myself , Took me almost an hour to do . I didn't hurt myself . Took my time , Made sure everything was “right” . Didn't pass any bloody parts of my body . Did not get a U.T.I. . Now I admit if the right person changes you're catheter ,,,, And you can relax and let happen ,,,,,,,, It does feel good . But with the nurses I've had .. My god . It was a bad B, and D experience .

@Jerry_Smith try the Coloplast speedicath flex pro . my aide catheterizes me 5 times a day no gloves no touch no infection the catheter is hydrophilic prelubricated inside a dry retractable sleeve so my aide never touches the catheter from package to in urethra no stops or touching , we don’t even use alcohol or anything , since she never contacts the actual catheter it eliminates all worries of cross contamination . I switched to them in early 2019 I get the 18 FR Coude ( the semi pointed tip to maneuver around obstructions ) tip 5 X’s a day no infections in last almost 10 years ( it will be ten years in June )

Coloplast Speedicath is what I was using. Since it’s for play and not because I have to, I’m going to stop playing.

I ended up in ER with a really bad infection. it turned out to be me using a latex catch. Now using silicone and no issues.

@Cleanout lover I too have had problems with latex . Not so much infection but irritating , sticking and really bad irritation of the meatus to the point of it looking like I had a S.T.D. . Un fortunately They don't make silicone catheter in the size I need . I did find silicone coated catheters of the large size i need and they are not expensive . Unfortunately I can't post the name as I seam to have been singled out and told if i name the brand zity will be sued .

I come to this site and enjoy the , I thought , free exchange of info and advice that has helped me live with a catheter with out unnecessary pain or discomfort . I'm lucky ,I am one of those people that almost never gets an U.T.I. and when I do It clears itself up in a day or so . I guess the result of a bad life . So I will continue to read you're posts , and give likes on good info , But one of the Moderators has “informed” me that if I share what works for me I will be reprimanded or censured .

I have been doing Foleys about 5 years had 2or3 UTI’s before I start my Foley retinue I start taking D-mannose

D-mannose is a type of sugar that some people believe may help treat UTIs. It may work by making it more difficult for the bacteria that are responsible for UTIs to attach themselves to the urinary tract.

I figured out what to do, you have to be very clean so I use rubber gloves first then spray EVERYTHING with betadine, even the Catheter and I use the HR Pharma Sterile Bacteriostatic Lubricating Jelly. Now I can wear the Foley for about a week, when I get ready to play, I remove the Foley first I plug the Foley and wait until I really bad need to pee then I release the Sterile water and let the Foley slide out with a lot of Pee behind it and then drink a lot of water and P about 3-4 times before sex …since I have started following this procedure have not had a UTI in the past year…Good luck

Two good responses . @jim31756 and @Cleanout_lover . I live so far out in the boonies it's not funny . So lack of supplies makes for need to make adaption's . Cloarx disinfecting wipes , Keep clean {brand name} hand sanitizer , 70% isopropyl alcohol . All used as cleanup before opening insertion kit . and putting on gloves that come in the kit . followed by betadine that also comes in kit . and then the sterile lube {also in kit} and finely the catheter .

I buy one case of catheter's ,10 insertion kits and 10 bladder flush kits at a time . All bought online . I have changed my own catheter now twice in two months .Have Taken my time . Am slow and careful . no U.T.I. s no bloody bits and piece's , no pain . No G@#%&^% D@#$%^%$# nurses giving me grief . The key I would surmise is get every thing ready , Sit or recline in a comfort . have every thing ready to hand . Take you're time . Don't force anything . Keep it clean.

All that said , It just is that my body passes large blood clots and that when it happens it is painful . I get usually one or two days a week with out pain . Not having to deal with nurses that do more harm then good allows me to enjoy those two days .

Back around 2015, Got sick had to go to the ER. They placed a catheter in, nurse did a terrible job putting it in hurt like a B. As it did coming out not to mention I told her a 100 times I was allergic to latex. That made it even worst…some people should not be in the medical field.
