Victorian era mentality VS negative body image

Came across the "Victorian era mentality" in another thread. The strange thing is when I grew up, being naked was no big deal: Until we kids hit puberty no one locked the bathroom when taking a shower. (I remember hating it walking into the bathroom finding it occupied by my mum or dad, wishing they would lock the door "like normal people" lol! However I did grow up feeling very negative about my body (well.. about all that is me actually :-\ ) This seems a bit like a paradox though.... Maybe the body was accepted but sexuality wasn't? Yet in the "Victorian age mentality" shame of the body and sexuality seem to be intertwined. Thoughts? Similar stories?

You're quite correct about there being a seeming dichotomy about we sometimes read and deduce about previous eras.

For instance when I was young I used to go swimming at the YMCA where nude swimming was mandatory. This was in the late 50's, early 60's in the US. And I too, especially when in Belgium, remember that bathroom nudity amongst family and with aunts and cousins was not thought of as being anything special. This last may perhaps stem from a time when living conditions were less spacious than in our present times and when very few households had a bath or washing room, let alone several bathrooms per house. One simply made do with existing conditions and overlooked the rest.

And in some part, what you might call a Victorian Age mentality also used things like nudity to enforce control. Institutions like schools or hospitals could and did use nudity and such to control pupils and patients.

Nor should we necessarily take all that is written about Victorian prudery as gospel.
