Few tips for the first-timers, I want to share after my own first time cathed
1. Unpack one catheter simply to see how the balloon works: how it inflates, at what capacity bends, and at what minimum capacity it become fully inflated - it will allow you to know how it works, and how it acts inside your body. Remember to discard this catheter afterwards --- (Totally worth it in my case, and also helped me to overcome anxiousness about balloon failure)
2. Be ready to discard half-dozen glove pairs, 1-2 catheters, and countless sterilization pads - first catheterization WILL be abortive. Even with all educational materials online you will not be able do it nice and clean/sterile, while inserting your first --- (I had a whole pile of discarded items near me, before managed to insert a catheter as clean as I could. That also said, that catheterization kit may be not the best choice for the first time, if you don't have nursing education)
3. If you want to leave it there for some time - prepare collection bags or diapers to collect the urine - it may not seem a big flow, but it will be quite a volume of urine in just a couple of hours
4. For males - be prepared to deal with night erections: you may not notice it usually, but with catheter in, they cause noticeable discomfort --- (It didn't wake me up, but when I was waking, discomfort was quite strong, at least first 5-6 days)
4b. If you are using night bag, and can't find comfortable position (or tend to move all over the bed like me) - try to wear diapers instead --- (I've used maxi-absorbent ones with a booster pad - it was easily enough even for weekend 10-hour sleep)
5. If you suddenly have frequent urge to pee (without any other signs of UTI - it's important!!!) - try to drink more water --- (Yeah, paradoxically, but the less water you drink - more urge you have)
5. Fully deflate balloon before pulling out - just connect empty syringe, and wait for a minute. After piston fully stops, you can give it an additional tug.
6. Pull out slowly, and fight the urge to pull it faster because of discomfort. Thing is, after some time inflated, balloon become stretched due to material properties (silicone-coated latex in my case). It folds down when deflated, but the folds itself remain, and could be potentially traumatic to urethra
7. If you accidentally catch some disease (even if it's only runny nose or slightly increased temperature) - stop. Having catheter under low immunity is not worth it
