Hi Flyfisher - seeking tips for using catheters.
Well it makes no difference whether for male or female for the most important tip of all which is cleanliness.
Beside only using catheters once and directly from a sealed pack I use a catheterisation pack which contains materials to create a sterile field as well as the means to cleanse the penis or vulval urethral areas. They cost so little that the use of them is a useful scene enhancer too.
Next is the handling of the catheter and this should really be done using only two pairs of sterile forceps. At the very least sterile gloves are the only alternative to this. Warning - normal latex ar nitrile examination gloves are not sterile. Catheterisation packs can be obtained with sterile gloves included.
Perhaps another important tip is to practice using them. And who better to practice on than yourself.
If a lubricant is used, inject it into the urethra from a sterile syringe without the needle. The stub of the syringe is comfortable enough to be inserted for half an inch or so. Use only lubricants without preservative.
Do not move the catheter in and out or reinsert it after removal. Remove slower than you insert. Regarding the length of time it sould be left in situ, different materials can be left for different lengths of time but for the purposes of play an hour is quite sufficient and there's no point in pushing the margins with attendant danger.
Finally, caution the patient that burning sensations on subsequent urination are to be expected for several hours. Drinks and products containing cranberry fruit extracts are highly recommended for cystitis, infection and urethral bruising.
Play careful, Play safe, Play well
