Definitely wooden if it's a paddle shaped like the bat used for cricket. On the other hand, the paddle that comes with a ball-on-a-string; that paddle would be a toss up.

I don't think they hurt any worse although they do leave a nice pattern. My school principal had one like that.

How about Lexan paddles, for those who have felt it? How does it compare to rubber and wooden?

IMO they are better than wooden if applied of female bottom. Lighter but still very painful. Boys are mostly unimpressed by lexan... but girls... oh.

I can tell you from personal experience that Lexan paddles are just deadly. In our house that thing is used in cases or serious misbehavior. I made ours with a lovely wooden handle and when I was in the store getting a small piece of Lexan the woman in the hardware dept. where I was having it cut smiled at me and remarked that someone was going to hate what it was going to be this but it was used in her house to keep things in order. She was sooo right !

I would say that the wooden paddles do more damage to the buttocks then the leather covered paddles. The leather makes more of a sound but the leather "softens" the blow and creates more of a sting. The wooden ones, depending on how thick and hard they are applied actually break the blood vessels and do much more damage. I am not saying not to use a wooden paddle, used properly and with the right amount of force and speed will deliver a very good spanking. If there are holes in the paddle, of course that will cause considerably more damage. If I were to give a spanking with a wood paddle, I would start over the clothing to gauge how powerful the paddle is. This would also add to the suspense to the spankee :-)

My birthday present from my father when I turned sixteen was *the* paddle. The implication was that I had reached an age where consequences where going to be more economic in nature. It’s a one inch thick, six inch wide unfinished pine board with a handle at one end. It has holes drilled somewhat randomly throughout to reduce air resistance and raise welts. I keep it beside the bed and my husband uses it on me occasionally. It hurts so much more that the leather paddle we have. It sure brings back memories.

Folks tend to gift wooden paddles, probably to get them away from sadists. I have only one wooden paddle in the toy bag and it was a door prize I won at TASSP. Made from an exotic hardwood, it has rounded edges and a narrow width. Came with a custom cloth sleeve too.

Wooden paddles can be very effective if made by a good crafstman, otherwise they may break or splinter and cause unwanted damage!

Where did you get spanked with Lexan paddle?

I would prefer to use the leather paddle because of it's flexible and somewhat pliable nature. The larger issue is the density of wood with a wood paddle. The heavier the wood, the easier to bruise. That is why I never use anything that is dense, or has a dense impact, aka, wood spoons, or a heavy wood hair or bath brush. The paddle I use to use was thin wood, with a long handle, perfect for OTK.

Original question was about difference between wooden paddle or a leather covered paddle. As it was not specified what "leather covered paddle" was made of, my assumption would be wooden paddle covered with leather. And I do not think that the leather cover would make much difference, unless there was padding under the leather.

My bottom is intimately familiar with all three kinds of paddles being discussed here, and I will even add a fourth.

As @gauguin pointed out, the original question was about a wooden paddle compared to a leather-covered paddle, but many responses have referred to a standard "leather" paddle, not leather that is covering wood.

We had a leather-covered paddle but it did not provide much impact or sting. It was like having a wooden paddle with a cushion covering the paddle The wooden paddle alone would have provided a sting, but the leather “padding”, not paddling, provided a cushion. I hope that's clear. The leather covering the wood was more like padding so the paddling impact was softer and lighter and not stingy.

We have two true leather-only paddles. One is a stiff leather paddle and the blade is about 10 x 3 inches (25.4 x 7.6 cm) with nice a leather handle. The other leather paddle is not stiff, but is rather "floppy" and I prefer it over the stiff one that feels almost the same as a wooden paddle.

The floppy leather paddle was about 18 x 4 inches (45.7 x 10.2 cm), but that was too long and much too floppy and too heavy for my petite wife to safely swing in my direction and it was literally unsafe to have her swinging something she could not control. So I cut the blade down to about 10 inches (25.4 cm) so she can handle it and spank me where I want to be spanked, on my bottom, instead getting her errant shots landing anywhere from my kidneys to my knees and sometimes wrapping around my side almost to the front of me. Based on the contributions, it looks like it's mainly men that enjoy the tender correction applied by their partners. Same with pegging, it signals role reversal - or role fluidity. Personally ( I rate as switch) - I am tempted to submit but I get the nagging questions:

I would have to say the wooden paddle if applied edge-on. Then there is lots of "thud" and little "whack" that causes narrow, deep bruising. The cane causes so much skin damage because all the force lands in a very narrow area. A leather riding crop or quirt delivers a lot of sting if judiciously applied.

Somebody said a hand on a bare bottom, but I think my hand wears out before the bottom does.
