Play Doctor Exam Kits for Children

My life partner and regular play Doc were walking through a Border's book store last month. This is a nationwide book store chain in the United States.

While exiting through the children's section, after using the restroom, we spotted a play Doc medical exam kit for children.

It came complete with a red stethoscope that included heart beat sounds, I assume from a little built in chip. How nice 🌹.

It also had a thermometer, head lamp, blood pressure cuff, tongue depressor, stick on patch that said, Doctor (fill in your name here) and a few other items, like play Band-Aids and bandages.

We could hardly believe this! Did you ever receive anything like this as a child?

Second, I wish that this came in adult sizes 😘.

Once upon a time Fisher-Price made a Doctor's set as well as a Nurse's set of play instruments. One noticeable difference was that the Doctor's was a black bag and stethoscope, while the nurse's was red and white. As well the doctor had a headlamp mirror, the nurse's kit had a cap. In addition to a stethoscope they had a nice selection of instruments as well as a bottle of candy "pills". It was low tech plastic but for the budding doctors and nurses of the day it was hours of fun.

I'm not sure if Fisher-Price still make them, but I know Welch-Allyn make a dynamite set for adults.

Actually, i did receive a little Dr. bag when i was really young that had a stethoscope, the little reflex hammer thingy, (hope you can all speak thingy, cuz i'm gonna use it alot here), the little tapered pointy thingy to look in your ears and up your nose, a name tag that just said "Doctor", and it included a box of bandaids and some gause. It might have had more in it, but i remember thinking at the time, "What am i supposed to do with this?" and i believe it was tossed in the far back corner of my closet and eventually sold at a garage sale...lol. For some reason, i think it was a Fisher Price play set, but i'm not sure. Would have been for sale in the late 70's if i had it brand new when i was young.

Well, i can tell it was a long time ago, i didn't remember it quite as accurately as i thought, but i was close. i think i was MAYBE 4yrs old or 5yrs tops...lol. i posted a pic of the kit in my albums. i couldn't get the links to work. Sorry.

After one of our sessions, a good friend of mine pulled out her family photo album and showed me a picture of her playing with one of those same Doctor play sets. She had the the stethoscope stuck in her ears. She must have been about 7 or 8 years old so it would have been from the early 80's.

I suspect a lot of us got our start with those toy sets. 😃

I'm pretty sure I had one too. Now, I keep a black tool satchel packed with "immediate needs" items; steth, BPcuff, thermometer, gloves, lube, a couple of suppositories, tongue depressors, otoscope and a few other goodies. Strangely (and maybe stupidly), I keep an identical satchel for my scent articles, dumbbells and gloves for obedience competitions as well. I make a careful check to make sure I'm picking up the right bag for the right event!

Here's what the immediate needs bag is really for. When my partner and I play, we always go to a nearby hotel. When we check in, we always go right to the room where I check his vital signs, do a very brief genital exam, a very brief DRE (talk about a tease!) and then I slip one of my custom-made suppositories into him. Just before I send him back to the car to get all our "stuff", I make him put his plastic pants on to avoid any accidents.

By the time we get the car off-loaded, and get the room set up for an exam, he is experiencing a great deal of distress. I generally give him a little dose of liquid glycerin just to keep that going, then I perform a complete exam, which lasts about an hour.

Believe me, when that's done, he's ready for his enema, and some relief. So yes, an anal speculum is always packed in the bag as well. And that's what's in my "grown up" doctor's play kit.

I believe i had all the pieces to it except the shot/syringe piece. I think that one somehow went missing, so i used the "thermometer" as the "shot" lol

I didn't had it never, however when I was six or seven old, I do remember still, playing that some girls tried to use on me the kit's syringe with its plastic needle not cave.

This "needle" jumped away when she tried to inject, lol

I never had a medical kit as a kid, but I still have a proper kit from when I worked in a clinic.

Yes there was one kicking around when I was a kid probably came from Woolworths or a market stall, and the older girl who lived next door used to play the doctor. It must have belonged to my younger sister as I was around 11/12 at that stage.

Some years later my other even younger sister had the Fisher Price one which was better quality.

Nowadays I have two soft aircraft cabin bags which are very discreet. The smaller one is normally ideal for a standard examination appointment. But if the lady has additional needs then I might take the larger one.

Actually they are both in Mallorca at the present time...My friends asked to borrow them and I had to quickly un-pack all the things...well I hope I un-packed all of them!

Never had a play doctor set, it was all we different artefacts we found around. we played with what we could get our hands on. I never dare asked Santa for such a thing.

Toy doctor’s kits were very common, when I was a kid. The neighborhood kids would get together in each other’s homes, choose a room, get busy, and start exploring. The “hiney thermometer “ always got used. Those plastic thermometers felt great, covered in Vaseline. I don’t remember if anyone was getting their temperature taken orally at that point. Maybe a couple of the older kids. If we were lucky, we didn’t get “busted “ by a mom, or older sibling.

fun memories huh?, I was 7 when I got my first and only real working stethoscope. (still have it btw)It was a gift from my pediatrician. it got used alot during our playing doctor sessions. on chest tummy backs and... other places. 🤭🤭

I got a doctor's set for Christmas when I was around 5 or 6

It had several pieces - all made of brightly coloured plastic. It included a thermometer, syringe, kidney dish and otoscope. I think there was also a small bandage in a box and there was an ointment jar which my mum had put some cold cream in

There was also a stethoscope with rubber tubing

It was all packed into a small "doctor's bag" - actually a toy attache case made of cardboard. This was to outlive all of the other items

I was given another stethoscope for Christmas the following year by my aunt.

Oh I totally remember that. Stethoscope, thermometer, syringe, otoscope I think. I got a lot of use out of that

The little girl up the street had one, including a red plastic thermometer which we eventually used for RTs. Eventually she brought the real one down from her room.

Growing up I saw many doctor kits in store windows, shelfs and displays. Wanted one so bad. I asked for one for my 7th, 8th, and 9th birthdays ... Never got one. I even thought about writting a letter to Santa asking for one but never did. Guess my parents particularly my mom knew it was gonna be used playing "naughty games". 🥺😢

I had one as a kid. Don't remember how old. I would say 12 or 13. Had a lot of fun playing Doctor and patient with the girl next door that was about a year younger than me.

I had one of the doctor kits also when I was a kid. It too had all the items mentioned. You had to be very careful with that thermometer because it was very small I recall and could easily get lost errrr wherever it might be placed.

One of the coolest memories I have though is when we played doctor you always found out the truth about how friend got their temperature taken. How? When the Dr., Nurse, Mom or Dad would say, "I need to take your temperature", if the kid laid down, there was your confirmation!

I do have to admit things were more fun though when we started using our parents real thermometers and other gear.

My cousin had this one only the bag was white. We spent many naughty hours playing with it. I think some of the bits are missing or maybe she just added them from other kits.

@Nurse_Phillips I remember having a similar play doctor kit, but my bag and most of the items were blue. Maybe they released the same set in multiple colors.

@Carly1988 I remember being chastised by my parents whenever we took the game too far. I would always respond with "but that's what the doctor does." Telling me that the doctor can do something but I can't only added to the embarrassment and arousal that I felt during my exams.

lol!, tried that excuse with my parents or who ever the adult that caught us was. It never worked.

The neighbor girl behind my house had one of those kits but actually had access to a real rectal thermometer, her Mom was a nurse.

I saw something like this in a toy catalog I was really young and for some reason was drawn to it. I never got to play with such a kit, but I do vaguely remember wanting to roleplay (Dr/patient, house, etc.) with female friends without knowing about sex at all. It was originally just about playing and be close to someone. Trying to remember, I think the dynamics of role playing games was also a big part of what made it fun. It was exciting to see what you could get away with/convince someone else to do. In both playing doctor and house there is a power attached to the roles; The doctor is in charge of the patient and the parents are in charge of the kids. It was exciting and a little scary to submit to someone playing the doctor and satisfying to be the one charge and have someone agree to follow your instructions.
