What was that "GOOD Enema" Mom always gave us in the 50's?

Sometimes when we’re older and needing or wanting an enema and no longer have the dexterity we once had, we may need someone experienced to give us a “proper” old fashioned enema (using a 2, 3 or 4 quart enema bag or bucket). They/we have to make sure there is a sufficient amount of soap shaken or stirred, into the warm water poured into the bag and with skillful administration, we are ready to bare our bottom and submit to the enema. You may choose to modestly drape yourself (or not). Then, once the enema begins, we have to communicate with the giver and we have to hold it!!!

The enema may have to be repeated until you achieve sufficient results. Some abdominal rubbing and changing positions may help the enema along. The person administering may have to click the hose on and off throughout the process. A little water at a time may be required to fill up to your cecum. (Thus, perhaps some panting, moaning or groaning…!!)

I would set aside a good hour or more for the administration of a proper enema. A longer time makes a huge difference in the results! I would want this kind of enema any day over a Fleet’s, laxatives or suppositories!!

@Moms_Egirl. I am now over seventy. I am fortunate to be able to irrigate at home alone. I do this every morning and the process from slipping out of bed to finishing up takes about forty-five minutes. It takes longer if I start with a Ducolax suppository. However I accept that I don't do much more than empty my rectum.

Recently, after a break of sixteen months, I have started to go to a new lady for my colonics. Her clinic is about forty minutes drive from where I live. She is very gentle, she also has significant bowel problems herself, but very thorough. She says "a colonic should cleanse the bowel from rectum to cecum.

During my last appointment I spent nearly ninety minutes on her couch, she uses a closed system, and was happy to use my SN CSRE-2.75 speculum enhancement nozzle, which means I don't wet her couch. Some therapists won't use it, insisting on those horrible plastic speculums. She starts me on my left side, then has me on my back and finally back on my left side. That is when those hollow legs start to empty. She also varies the water temperature and gently massages my abdomen. After she had finished with me she ushered me to the ensuite toilet, put on the music, and told me not to flush as she would like to see what came out. Oh my goodness where did that come from?

What she did say was that she had shifted a lot of gas, mucous and stool that had been in my bowel for a long time! I have my next appointment with her in November. Next time she will be including a herbal enema and she said "I will book you a long appointment as you will need more time on the toilet after that". So a colonic every four weeks and before and after holidays.

So fortunate to have found her. Her fees are so reasonable and she is very broad minded! But it goes to show that for me home irrigation isn't enough.

I have fond memories of an amber bag with soap. My Mom used that all the time. Sometimes it appeared to be thick like buttermilk. When I would expel, there would be a lot of soap bubbles in the toilet mixed with the stool. It also produced belly cramps!

@Moms_Egirl Good morning to you. It's sooo good to be clean. A clean bottom is a happy bottom! Interesting that Ms J says that many of her clients, both male and female, don't have constipation but come to her for colonics simply to be clean. Today was a Microlax mini enema followed by four quarts of very warm soapy water implanted through my SN OF-13-FLY colon nozzle. Thank you so much.
