I must say I find nursing a immensely rewarding job, but its also demanding and does require a level of dedication. There has always been the debate as to whether its an art or science , but whichever philosophy you adhere to , its always be a hands on caring, compassionate profession.
As Ginnie alluded over my career the amount of red tape and paperwork has increased a hundredfold and we spend far to much time on computers and pawerwork and away from the patients. Maybe I'm old schooled but I do enjoy that patient contact, the chats etc. l have always found it fascinating chatting to patients about their live experiences and have learnt so much about life from them.
Over the last few years with the various economy drives, cost cutting measures etc, the staffing levels have dropped dramatically and the workload has increased. We just don't have the amount of free time , its always a rush even in ITU and HDU which is a shame, but sadly reflects the modern attitude to healthcare.
Ginnie said it eloquently when she said " really love our jobs and the people we care for." I do find it such a rewarding experience and really could not see myself doing anything else despite the long hours, poor staffing, cutbacks etc
Don't get me wrong there are good and bad nurses as with all professions, but I get really annoyed when I see or hear about nurses not acting compassionately. It really infuriates me, those are simply not need in the profession period.
Yes I had patients that are classed as difficult, I have have always found a bit of compassion and understanding and the respond positively ( well in the majority of cases).
