So many enemas, so many memories.
As for bulb enemas I recall for several summers when I was young my mother employing two school girls. One was Betty. The other was Robinson. Must have been a last name as she was both Robinson, and Robbie. Not sure what age I was. Perhaps from 4 to 7? Betty and Robbie were older teens. At college.
For some reason it started when I needed an enema and mom asked the girls if they'd ever given an enema, they said no, and mom said something along the lines of, 'you know what an enema is though?' They said yes and mom said, 'have you had enemas yourselves?' and they both had and mom said that was good.
I find it interesting that there are some things about Betty, Robbie, and enemas I can't seem to call to mind yet remember bits of dialog from many decades ago I'm fairly sure of. Long story short, mom said she needed to give me an enema and the two girls could help and learn how to do it.
One thing I do remember I wasn't keen on it. I protested. Didn't do any good. Mom showed the girls how to mix the soap into the water in a white metal basin she kept under the sink, then out came the enema bulb, one of several mom had. I can't quite grasp the memory of what happened next but I do know I was on my back, legs held aloft by mom with her left hand while her right filled the bulb, inserted and squeezed. Then one of the girls gave me a squirt and then the other. Not sure how many but it was a small bulb so several repeats.
It was all very serious but I remember getting enemas from them many times when mom wasn't around and they'd giggle.
I also had suppositories from them too.
While they were with us in the summer they had their own room at the cottage. In the city they'd also show up to babysit sometimes. Perhaps just one of them but usually together. In the city, if it was in the evening I remember mom and dad going out and mom asking them to give me an enema at bedtime. Betty must have been a keen enema giver because if mom didn't say anything about a bedtime enema she'd ask, 'would you like Tommy to have a suppository or enema?' Mom might say no, she thought I didn't need one. Other times she'd say it was probably a good idea and thank Betty for asking.
It's been awhile since I thought of Betty and Robbie and those bulb enemas.
