The article states hydration for casualties during WW-I was common. IV’s weren’t available then but they are now used in the battlefield and are more effective. Medics carry them (IV’s) and in some cases they are carried in combat packs.

In combat or survival situations in the ocean salt water or dirty contaminated water can be used in enemas that orally could or would sicken or kill you .

Depending on how dehydrated someone is the colon can absorb up to approximately one liter (quart) per hour. no salt should be added.
