When you were young, was there free and open discussion about being given enemas? Did your schoolfriends ever swap experiences or volunteer information that they had been given an enema? Did you ever ask about enemas?
When I was growing up the subject was largely taboo, and so for a long time I had no idea whether the enema was a common practice or not. There was not the openness and frankness which seems to have been more typical in American society, at the time and today. it often made you wonder if you were the only person in world who had this treatment, although logic told you this could not be so. I overheard my best friends mother say that she needed an enema when she was ill one day, and I knew my cousin was given enemas by my Aunt, who seemed very keen on the idea, but for the rest, there was a silence around the subject. I wonder how many subscribers to this board found the topic a common place one for discussion, or more importantly, did not feel terribly embarrassed at the thought that others might know that you had recently had an enema?
