One problem I find with bulb syringes is minimising the air bubble remaining in the bulb when refilling it from a bowl of solution, without having to squeeze the hell out of it a couple of times.
Of course, you can hold it upright again and slowly squeeze the remaining air out and then double-dip it. But this takes time and practice to master without spraying tainted solution everywhere.
I have a simple modification that enables anyone - regardless of experience, hand size and strength - to refill a bulb syringe from a bowl of solution in seconds, with almost no air bubble remaining inside. All it needs is a short piece of rubber hose installed inside the bulb itself, to extend the internal dimension of the nozzle down to almost the bottom of the bulb. The technical term for this is a "stand pipe".
With the stand pipe in place, all the administator has to do to fill the bulb completely is invert the nozzle into a bowl of solution and give the bulb a number of gentle squeeze-release actions until the air bubbles stop. The bulb is now full of solution and ready for administration.
And yes, may feel the standpipe inside the bulb if you try and squeeze it hard enough. But it does not reduce the volume of each pump, because this is offset by eliminating the air bubble (dead space) in the bulb in the first place.
You will have to choose the diameter and length of stand pipe to suit your own bulb syringe. In my case, the stand pipe was cut from a section of black rubber hose I bought from an auto spares shop. This has a thick wall and does not perish or crush easily, because it's intended to carry a strong vacuum. Select a brand that is smooth and rubbery on the outside. Use a large pair of electricians side-cutters to cut the hose. The end of the stand pipe nearest the base of the bulb must be cut off on an angle or a vee, so it can't get sealed off by being too close to the base of the bulb. Otherwise the bulb will be very hard (or impossible) to squeeze when it is full of solution.
Dismantle the apparatus after use and wash it out and let it dry.
The best improvement I have found since this modification is that refilling the bulb is now so simple that a new partner can master it in one go, and this has given her confidence to take control. 😁
