Threatening with a rectal temperature check when faking illness

To what extent did parents, in the era when mercury thermometers were common, employ the threat of a rectal temperature measurement to prevent older children from feigning illness to stay home?

When I grew up in the early 80's rectal thermometers were still very common. If I wanted to stay at home from school, I was always asked going to my bed and lower my underwear to have my temperature taken before the deciding if I was allowed to stay at home. It was no idea trying to faking illness - because they told me "we need to let the thermometer decide"...

I was never threatened.

Like mrtemp. In the 80's whether faking sick or actually sick, a rectal temp happened.

No threats just taken rectally night and morning

When I was ill my mother always took my temperature with a rectal thermometer as long as I lived at home (until my mid-20's). I never faked being ill because our family doctor told her to give me a daily hot soapsuds enema whenever I was too sick to go to school to keep my bowels emptied out during the illness. I dreaded getting those daily enemas so I never dreamed of faking illness.

There was never a threat, it was just expected, but woe be you if you were faking it. Not only would you be going to school, but your butt would be sore, and not from the thermometer.
