Signs of dental fetish?

What kind of signs do you think could indicate that someone might have a dental fetish? Some people like to talk about their dental experiences rather openly, but I don't know if that is really a sign in most cases. Maybe it's just a timely topic of discussion for them if they recently had an appointment. Different people have different ideas of personal privacy anyways.

A long time ago I had a female colleague who seemed to like me, as she often came to me for a casual chat. Once she told me about her trip to her home country to see a dentist. I was too shy to pick up from there, which I still regret. She had some amalgam fillings, and maybe she had noticed that I liked to see a flash of them, although I never said anything about it. But I will never know for sure.

A few years ago I had a friendly chat with a nice lady at an expat event. She had a missing upper premolar which I noticed, and maybe she noticed that I noticed, although I tried not to pay attention to it. Anyway, we just had a normal small talk for a while and then went on mingling with others. Later in the evening, I saw her around. She looked at me, smiled and turned her head slightly so that the tooth gap was very clearly visible. Maybe it wasn't intentional, but I had a strong feeling that she did it on purpose. Her boyfriend was also at the event, and they left soon after that. I never met her again, but still remember her smile.

I also remember a young woman who was a colleague of my friend. Once I went out with my friend and some of his colleagues. She was there wearing a tooth-shaped earring. I wanted to ask about its meaning, but I thought it would be awkward, so I'm still wondering.

I get it manifests differently for everyone. Like you I love seeing metal in a woman's mouth, but I'm also anxious to talk dental to strangers as to not come off weird

@Cogwheel I don't want to presume too much but I think you are projecting a bit. A dental fetish is really rare. For basically everyone the dentist is just some mundane and annoying thing that they occasionally have to deal with in their lives. They don't even consider the idea that somebody could have a fetish for it, let alone assume you have this fetish just because they catch you looking in their direction.

Like when the conversation is about dental stuff, for you it means things are moving into fetish territory, but the other person doesn't see it like that at all. So maybe you are getting uncomfortable because you are now talking about a fetish topic with a colleague, but for her she is just chatting about simple life stuff, nothing weird about it. And unless you make it like super obvious she won't have any ideas that it means something different to you.

We have a tendency to assume that other people are like us and think like us, but that is often not the case and when it comes to something as rare as a dental fetish we are certainly the exception rather than the rule.

Well, in real life, I don't really have a habit of consciously trying to signalise my fetishes, even to a person I'm attracted to. And I don't have a habit of making strong assumptions based on weak evidence either. It can be still fun to speculate and fantasise a bit sometimes. Those real-life examples were obviously lacking too many nuances and the detailed context to be fully judgeable. My intention was just to exemplify what kind of signals I had in mind.

Maybe I'm completely wrong, but I'd like to think a (dental) fetish as a spectrum rather than a black and white on-off thing. I'd guess most people enjoy seeing a person of the preferred sex smiling with their teeth visible. Some people find cuteness in imperfections, like crooked teeth or overbite, which could be considered as a mild form of fetish. And then there are those stronger forms of dental fetishes for fillings and treatments and so on. Those strong fetishes are apparently very rare, but I wouldn't be surprised if the milder forms were fairly common.

Anyways, thanks for your comment @lightsinner. I understand that I'm just one sample from the population of 8 billion different human beings, and probably not very generalisable one. That's exactly why I'd like to hear what you others think.

My dental fetishes are rather limited to specific areas of dentistry. I really can get turned on to seeing a cute woman sporting a full mouth of metal braces. I’ve personally worn braces as a 40+ year old guy so I have real experience here. I was fascinated with how they worked. I tolerated the discomfort and really enjoyed each time I had adjustments. I actually looked forward to the real soreness for 3 or 4 days afterwards! And yes, when my braces were removed after 2 1/2+ years, I REALLY MISSED THEM! I also enjoy receiving dental injections and feeling the numbness just “take over”. I don’t particularly like getting drilled, or having an extraction, but the shots that precede these procedures are a real “turn on” for me. Despite most opinions, these numbing shots are usually not painful!
