Decades after I had them, they have raised the question of why I would have a physical exam every Spring with my brother, my parents both teachers, off, and away from home for the Summers, returning at the start of the school year, and then, in fourth, or fifth grade, and ahead of the wrestling season, I would have another exam? In the former, the end of the alphabet last name boys, about nine of us, were sent together to the nurse's office, told to go to shared cubicles, undress to underwear only. Each of us, in alphabetical order, were then taken by the nurse to a room with a doctor, and an exam table. We were given brief exams, from heights, weights, to lying back on the table, the waistband of our briefs pulled back.
Ahead of wrestling season, boys on the team were given passes to the nurse's office. We supplied urine samples, then stood, dressed, outside a room. One by one, we went into the room. The seated doctor told us to lift our shirts so he could listen to hearts, and lungs, then drop pants, and underwear for hernia checks. The older boys would then get as far as stuffing shirts into pants, and go out another door, zipping up, buckling pants in the nurse's open office, next to the waiting boys.
But why? Annual physical exams would have forms for school. The extra exam happened only once. The sports exam was minimal at best. Did anyone else have multiple exams in one year?
