The newer types of oxygen masks

I'm talking about those. When I watch an ER documentary, lately I've been noticing they've been all around. Probably replacing the ones we have.

Obviously I haven't worn one (yet?), but I don't find them as arousing to look at as the older ones. Of course maybe my medfet software needs some updating. Feels like the equivalent of a modern building vs a 19th century tower (hyperbolic, of course), kinda...

But for other mask enthusiasts like me, how do you feel bout those new models?

They're not new - they're different types of masks.

The one with the bag attached to it is a non-rebreather mask, user for delivery of high concentrations of oxygen, 90-100%. Oxygen from the source fills the bag and when the patient breathes in, the bag empties and the oxygen goes into the lungs. When the patient exhales, a small flap valve closes and the exhaled gas leaves the mask through the exhale ports in the side of the mask. The exhaled air never mixes with the fresh oxygen.

The other mask is a simple face mask. It delivers about 50% oxygen, depending of the liter flow of oxygen. Oxygen gathers in the mask itself, there is mixing of the exhaled air, so it is not as efficient as the non-rebreather.

Both have their place in care. It all depends on what the patient's need is.

Oh...forgot this part.

What you wore for general anesthesia was probably something like this mask. It attaches to the anesthesia machine and is designed to allow you to be ventilated through it.

@Chip193 You misunderstood that post. I know the difference between different types of oxygen masks. I mean, as an enthusiast of that stuff, I know a whole lot about 'em. It's just that the model, the shape, the appearance of the thing itself seems to have changed.

I know what you're talking about @Hi_iaka , and they do sem pretty newfangled. But having seen them on young females on stock pic websites, I actually do like them a bit more. They look a bit more severe to me. The gasket looks a lot more pronounced, and the gasket is my favorite part of a mask. I like it a bit thicker.

I'm getting to be that way. On the protective mask side of things, which titillates me more these days, you are seeing all these "fashion" masks go to market. All different colors and patterns. Cloth over paper. Self-decoration, which often looks *really* bad.

They supposedly look "cooler" than a 3M 7500 cartridge respirator or a light blue cone surgical mask. But my fetish for protective masks on girls started with actual surgical masks, and progressed through 3M cartridge respirators that Stanford has patients wear for immunosuppression. I like the masky look. I like severity. I like it looking inappropriate to "normal" fashion, but it being fully appropriate to its actual use. I don't like a mask pretending to be a fashion piece.

But yeah, I'm 50 now, and COVID kind of changed everything, at least concerning protective masks. Maybe I also need to "update my medfet software". I think that was well put.

As for these oxygen masks, I do see a certain departure from the "old type", and that can always be a bit distressing. We grow up with the world being a certain way, and after a while, it's like "get off my lawn!". It's hard to keep up with the changes. So, I get the nostalgia. I think I'm a bit nostalgic for the "black beauty". Again, the severity of it. It means business.

Up until the early 1970's, black rubber oxygen masks, similar to anesthesia masks, were used. You can often see them in older medical dramas from the 60's and early 70's.

@Aardvark Hah, I bet the fetishists of that time (because for SURE there were already) had a similar experience as me when the masks became clear rather than black. I reckon a LOT of people, especially older, are into the black beauty anesthesia masks.

So its been around for a number of years . I have used these types of intersurgical mask with and without the reservoir in the ITU for a number of years. They are also on all the crash trolleys .

These medium to high concentration oxygen mask were not available for home use .....but over the last few years they seem to be more readily available for home use from suppliers like medbis.mediq and medicalsupplies for those in the UK.

I like to try them but sadly it's not available in my country in here even finding non-rebreathers are hard to find they are mostly rebreather oxygen masks so I may try using real oxygen to calm my need because of limited variety of mask I wished some one with experience could share how does it really feel using real oxygen with oxygen mask
