Unexpected Examination

Anyone else ever undergone a unknown in advance physical examination scheduled by a acquaintance, friend , husband or wife? I did unexpectedly several years ago when my regular primary care provider switched practices and it was going to be somewhat of a distance further than I wished to drive.

In the interim I on ocassion had the passing thought that I needed to find a new practitioner but it seemed to always escape me abd was put off.

I was rapidly approaching my prescribed medications running out the last refills having been 90 day supply. My daily medications generally are Blood Pressure, Thyroid associated. Suddenly began having bouts of slight lightheadedness and periodic lethargic days that came to the attention of my wife whom began making me realize I needed to secure a new medical provider soon as possible that I again gave only consternation toward instead of actually arranging.

A brief period elasped and one evening the wife informed me that she had a next day outing planned for us including a mall and dinner event after a appointment she had on her schedule unbeknownst to me in actuality a appointment for me.

Having showered and dressed that early morning off we went for her planned festivities which began cross town into a business , medical park familiar to me having driven her to her primary care appointments on ocassion.

As we progressed thru the park my thoughts arose that possibly she had such an appointment today not relayed to me in advance and soon yes I was directed to turn into that practices parking lot and once parked she proclaimed "ok we're here for your visit as a new patient" . Immediately I began feeling a bit despondent and nervous knowing I'd never been seen by a female physician ever in the past only my male physicians attending nurses.

I asked as to when this had been scheduled by her and she replied a couple of weeks ago but I wanted to keep it unknown to you preventing any anxiety and uncomfortable emotions for that period of time . I myself had the mindset that this practice was primarily for female need by female providers and when I now addressed that to my wife she replied " she ocassionally does care for males of her existing regular female patients and as far as I know your first visit will only be a standard preliminary type procedure of doing vitals and going over your medical history charting that I was able to have sent over from your last practice and you will likely only discuss your most recent concerns that have arose.

Unexpected Examination Pt.2.

Knowing i had no out of this upcoming encounter we proceeded to going into the office myself encircled with anxiety and trepidation as we entered the facility and headed for the patient checking in for appointment area noticing the entire waiting area only occupied by female beings and female staffing.

Once i entered my name upon the office log with its arrival time and notation as to whom I was there to see the clerk observed it and proclaimed " you're here to see Dr. .... as a new patient wait and I'll have some forms for you to fill out with being a new patient of hers". Knowing this had been overheard by all in attendance i quickly observed all the waiting rooms eyes seemed to be upon myself putting me in a very intense state of anxiety again. I became seated and just moments after filling out the assigned forms were summoned from a side door by a staff nurse and told to accompany her with my wife in tow.

Within the hallway my preliminaries began and once attained began being led to my examining room with a last bit of preliminaries conducted. " You'll soon be seen for your physical examination so if you would please remove your shoes and all clothing except the socks and underpants you have on and we need you to put on a examining gown I'm about to give you". My heart began racing in anticipation of my upcoming experience a first no doubt. I was next subjected to a rather humiliating moment when handed a gown with its vibrant pink floral design with the nurse commenting " sorry but it's currently the only choice that can be given". Apparently her and my wife noticed a throat gulp and reddened face upon me and briefly laughed at my expense .

The nurse exited and I reluctantly complied with my ordered task and became seated upon the papered examining table trepidly awaiting the physicians arrival. I exclaimed to my wife " so much for your earlier assumption of what I'd encounter today" bringing about more laughter from her that now had me sensing that she was enjoying these moments of what I was incurring throughout.

Shortly I heard the sounds of apparently high heeled shoes approaching from the outer door hallway and yes next came the door knock for my response of "yes" and then the entering appearance of my assigned care giver. After her introductory welcome to me and soft handshake she began a brief conversation with my wife and as to my need to be here today for care answered by both myself and wife.

Figuring this likely would be a brief examination addressing specifically my most recent occurrences I was quickly proven wrong as she went to the door and summoned the earlier seen nurse whom acted as her assistant and I instantaneously knew this was going to be the full monty exam as it turned out to be with its genital exam and accompanying rectal/Prostate examination putting me in a embarassing, humiliating, demeaning and somewhat emasculating state of mind being examined for all with all that saw me undergoing the procedures.

Once completed and the physicians exiting happened the nurse responded to me" Welcome to the practice". Yes it was quite a welcoming. Again anyone else experience similar occurance?

After our second child, my wife and I both knew we were done having kids. She called a local urologist and scheduled an appointment for me. On the phone, the practice told my wife they scheduled me for a vasectomy consultation. We both thought she was supposed to go too because they wanted to make sure we were both ok with this decision. Because of the phrase consultation, we thought they were just going to give us some information, explain things to us, and maybe book the procedure. We figured 5-10 minutes at most.

That was my first time being at a urologist, so I was definitely nervous and awkward. When the nurse/ assistant called my name, she instantly explained how she had a nursing student shadowing her today and asked if that was okay with me. She did this all right in the middle of the waiting room. Everyone in the room was now staring at me, which did not help with me feeling nervous and awkward. Of course I said yes.

After the assistants left my wife and I in the exam room, the doctor came in, asked questions, briefly explained the procedure, and answered all of our questions. It was a good "consultation" and we were feeling pretty good about it all as we were wrapping up. All three of us stood up at pretty much the same time. The doctor gets a weird look on his face as he tells me, "uhhh, I need to do a quick examination and make sure everything is ok for the surgery." I get the deer in the headlight look and my wife just starts giggling. I remember going to the table and dropping my pants while my wife sat right in front of me suppressing her smiling and laughing.

I've never had an examination which I didn't know was coming but I did have an exam which although I knew was coming I had no real idea about the actual content of what would atually be done during it and so it certainly came as a big shock to me. It was arranged by my wife and a friend of hers who is a reasearch nurse and was doing a study into prostate health so I wasn'tdirectly involved in arranging it or what they had I assume discussed between them tht I would be required to have done during the exam. My wife basically just gave me the minimum of details about it and "persuaded" me to sign up for it, and while I knew I was going for an exam involving my prostate and an ultrasound, I had n real clue what those things they had mentioned would actually involve and what happened once I got there on the day of the exam was certainly very unexpected for me !
