Neuropathy of the colon

I,m a 72 year old male with Neuropathy of the colon, A result of having type 1 diabetes since 14 years of age. I take a two, 2 quart enemas every two days to stay regular. Anyone else have a similar issue to share your thoughts on how you deal with the process. This has been approved by my doctor. My wife supports me and is very supportive.

My daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was 11. I hope with everything I’m worth that she doesn’t eventually develop gastroparesis and/or enteric neuropathy.

I don't believe my issue is neuropathy. I had constapation issues from birth through child hood years. Alwayscwas an enema enthusiast.most of my adult lufr I was fairly regular.im now 76. Starting about ten years I again started being constipated. My issue is that the stool in my rectum will be dried out and I cant pass it. If I can it is painfull. Used Miralax for a long time. For years a half capfull in my coffee did the trick. Then a full capfull was needed. Then that wasn't enough. I started twice a day. I have no other issues no pain just dried out stool no matter how much water I drink.

Not being shy about enemas, I decided to just start taking a small enema every day. I usually take a quart or less with a bulb syringe. Hold it for ten minutes or so and go on with life. This has been better than all the Miralax. No bloating and completely predictable. Once a week I'll usually do a large volume soapsuds enema for a good clean out.

I keep notes - terrible memory - on my enemas. I take an enema every two days to empty my colon. I my case, the cause is late onset Parkinson’s. My PCP and my neurologist are aware of my enema use and concur, that for me, enemas are the best way to deal with the constipation caused by this disease.

I’ve adjusted the volume and soap concentration to maintain adequate cleansing. A table spoon of Dr Bronner’s peppermint soap in 2.5 quarts and 20ml of soap in 3 quarts. I use a 30FR silicone coated latex Foley fully inserted as a rectal tube to deliver the solution. To aid in retention and to avoid leakage due to cramps, I massage my abdomen with a Magic Wand vibrator. Retention times are anywhere between five and ten minutes, timed from the start of flow. I seem to get best results retaining the enema for about six or seven minutes.

I’m 76, retired, and have the time to do this.

There’s an added benefit too, most enema sessions result in a noticeable feeling of well-being and over all relaxation. I’ll take all the dopamine/endorphin boost I can get to counteract the loss caused by the PD.

My wife has PPMS, total loss of muscle control from T8 down. Definitely colon neuropathy. We just deal with it.

Peripheral serotonin in the gut regulates gut health and immune system function in addition to stimulating bowel movements. Although produced in the gut, this peripheral serotonin does not cross the blood-brain barrier to affect mood directly, though it is crucial for communicating with the brain via the vagus nerve.

It takes the second 2 quart enema to stimulate the brain and colon nerves to get the thorough cleanout to be effective. Your info clarified this.

Long ago at another forum, I knew a man who took enemas daily because his colon did not function. He did not announce his diagnosis and it seemed rude to ask, so I've always wondered. Now I have some idea what his medical issue may have been.
