Occupational Reasons for Surgery

Astronauts, especially those who plan to remain in orbit for several months, are often asked to undergo appendectomies and cholecystectomies. In the past, such surgeries were mandatory; today, they are strongly encouraged not only to reduce the risk of disrupting or even terminating a mission while already in orbit, but also to avoid interruptions to the normal training schedule before launch.

These procedures are also performed on servicemembers before deployment to regions where medical care may be limited or medical evacuation impossible. Are there any professions that might require you to undergo a surgical procedure?

This is an interesting topic, I've never heard anyone would be asked to have their appendix removed for no reason. And I think most doctors would refuse to perform such surgeries without a legitimate medical reason. Do you have any sources for these claims? It's completely new to me.
