Love this thread.... Metamucil works wonders for staying regular. As for bad constipation, enemas are a great route to go. I've heard that magnesium citrate is a good nuclear option.
A real post surgery input for attaining soft stools is a dose of miralax in the morning along with two low strength sofr stool tabs. This makes soft stools a reality without diahhrea.
If I get constipated I'll take 2 or 3 Extra Strength Ex-Lax Pills or 3 Dulcolax Tablets at bedtime which usually makes me have a few large urgent runny bowel movements early the next morning. If the laxative doesn't seem to be working I'll insert a glycerin suppository which usually gets things started in 20 minutes to an hour or a Dulcolax suppository which usually works in 10-20 minutes. Failing all else I'll take a hot soapsuds enema using Ivory soap which almost always cleans everything out of me or sometimes a Fleet Enema if I don't have time to take a soapsuds enema. I guess I'm mostly just doing what my mother did to me when I was growing up right through until I moved out in my mid-20's.
Perhaps you might want to try a Fleet (Bisacodyl Stimulant) Mini Enema. It is basically a Dulcolax dosage in a 1.25oz liquid enema. Most likely not in most retail drugstores, but easily available on amazon or other online sources. Works quite well for me. Good luck.
Next to the toilet in the master bathroom, I installed a very small 2.5 gallon (9.5 liter) water heater to which I have attached two hoses each with a special nozzle. The one nozzle is a sprayer that acts as a bidet and the other is a very small enema nozzle that provides quick, convenient, and efficient enemas. And I'm already sitting on the toilet so the expulsion is extremely convenient. And if I need help pooping, the enema nozzle does that, too.
Agree with those who say diet, water intake and exercise. Not that I need it, but tomato juice goes through me like a roto-rooter. If I ever get constipated, a Bloody Mary or two would fix me up fast!
I have IBS C so normal was impacted ,having tried and failed many different things ,I am now on a medication regimen that instead of trying to trigger a movement we are unable to retain anything so as soon as it gets to rectum it's going in my diaper .I do have nurse friends who swear to a pat of butter in prune juice warmed enough for the butter to melt , they also have hospital policy MOM and fig newtons .Figs of course are dense with fiber and are a natural laxative ,fig newtons are just a convenient handy tasty way of getting fiber ,you can eat cookies after lunch in the park and nobody cares ,try mixing up some metamucil (LOL)
Drinking lot of water, Middle tertian diet, fiber taken from ananas and apples (and was quite cheap, labeled for weight loss, much cheaper than laxative one)
Of course a enema and suppository but also high fiber diet fruits and coffee. I find a lubed finger or plug also give me the feeling to go.
I find I have issues after a day of forgetting to drink enough water or fluids. Which many others have suggested can be an issue. So keep your hydration up.
Hydration and exercise, those are the basics that keep me going. I try to drink lots of water and do something every day to keep my body (and insides) moving.Since I am prone to constipation, when I’m feeling that the basics are not enough, it’s old-fashioned warmed prune juice, MiraLAX, and sometimes a magnesium glycinate gummy at bedtime.I don’t rely on enemas nearly like I used to. However, if I’m having a GI upset or now and then just plain feeling out of sorts, an old-fashioned enema helps to revive my spirits. It feels good to clean myself out occasionally.
