Martinet

There is strong evidence that the martinet was used on children in a non-negligible share of French households well into the 1980s; the same, I guess, as hairbrushes and paddles in the US. Yet, it is quite rare to see videos of adult spanking featuring a martinet, while videos of spankings with hairbrushes or paddles are commonplace. I wonder why.

Have chatted with some guys who got the martinet used on them...this would have been in the 80s/90s when they got it. I was surprised to learn that each of them got the martinet used on the back of the legs vs the butt.

The few videos I've seen of a martinet in use were mostly doing it "wrong," swinging it like a belt or strap, with very little reaction from the receiver.

Apparently the proper method is to swing it quickly in a circle or a figure eight, striking the intended target at the farthest point of that arc from the person holding it. The tips of the many lashes are the only part that makes stinging contact. The few people I've known who discussed it were about evenly divided between being hit on the buttocks or the thighs.

@superego They were on sale in regular shops in the 1980s, and then in pet shops / pet aisles in the late 1990s/early 2000s when it had stopped being socially acceptable to use them on children, but I thought they were no longer on sale now at all (except sex shops etc.) due to pressure from child protection associations! I've not seen one in years, I'm surprised you saw some 4 years ago!

@Spence1819 I've heard about this use on the back of the legs, and seen it in old comics. In the old days, boys used to wear shorts all year, not trousers, and girls used to wear skirts (or dresses), so one could use a martinet on the calves without even having the boy disrobe. But in the 1980s/1990s of course boys would wear trousers except in summer. Did these guys have to disrobe?

I have acquaintances who got it from their parents in the 1980s, perhaps even early 1990s, but I certainly cannot ask for details. 😃

@pinotnoir I think you're correct, it's the tips that must hit. Were they getting it on the bare; or at least over panties/briefs? I suspect a light martinet (as were those sold for use on children, I think) does not have much effect over thick clothing.

Most of those seem to have the giver using the martinet like they would a strap, hitting with the length of the straps rather than the tip.

I bookmarked a video long ago of someone doing it right--I remember whirling figure eights and only the tips of the lashes landing--but it appears to be gone now. Sigh...

@PinotNoir I’m not all that familiar about different types of floggers, or exactly what a martinet looks like. Saw some on the internet that look like the ones in the following video, which demos (I think) the techniques you described. Let me know what you think. Looks like it takes a bit of practice!

We have 2. One that’s made of deerskin and one that’s rubber. The spinning/figure 8 technique is what my husband uses

I lived in France for 2 years following my husband's retirement. I love the French way of life and Americans could learn a lot from them. They do many thing better than us (Making a car is not one of them and America is making some damn good wine these days.) but corporal punishment instruments is one of them. A martinet inflects nasty multiple stings but it's surface stings and there is no harm to the person's derriere. A martinet is a far better correctional instrument than than those popular in America like wooden paddle -- hairbrush -- razor strap -- switch -- belt.

Those videos do show what I understand to be good technique.

I wrote a FemDom novel some time ago in which the dominant woman educates her man on the martinet before using it on him, so I did a bit of research. It's named after a French military officer in the 1600s, Jean Martinet, who was a real stickler for discipline and correctness, yet didn't want his punishments to render his men incapable of doing their duty. The martinet worked quite well for that purpose.

(It's pretty amazing how much research there is in erotic novels--and how much of it has nothing to do with sex.)

@Jacana Replace word martinet with flogger, same thing, and you will find it is very popular impact play tool. I own 2 and have been on receiving end countless times.
