Joint Physical Exam

Has anyone experienced a real physical exam where you were examined with another person in the same room? I am not thinking about group sports or military physicals, more of a office appointment where you would be examined with a stranger, or at least a non-family member.

A few months back someone posted about going to the doctor with a friend for their physical exams and he remembered it as being 'fun.' I revisit that idea from time to time and have wondered what it would have been like. When younger I did see my friends while changing in the locker room, but that dynamic is different then seeing or being seen in an exam setting.

Recently I remembered that after university I was offered an accounting position at a large firm. I was offered a job subject to passing a physical exam. When I stated that I had a recent exam at my own doctor, the interviewer bristled and stated "you must undergo a physical examination by our own doctor at an office downtown. He will be examining all new hires on such-and-such a date, and you will be required to report there at 10 am," or something along those lines.

I ended up taking another job offer (which I do not remember as requiring an exam). so I never had to go to that appointment. Thinking about it, even at the time, I was wondering what it would entail. She never looked at an appointment book, or asked me if it was convenient, simply: report at 10 am. I wondered if everyone being interviewed at the time received the same demand. I also wonder: had I reported, would I be standing with a group of men in my underwear? Would we be shuffled among stations or rooms? Any thoughts?

On a slightly different note, I think about showing up for an exam (a role playing exam) where the doc calls me back to an exam room and then knocks on the door and says "this is 'Brad.' I'm running behind so I'm going to examine you two together."

Only at MEPS and Boot Camp, and those were in large groups.

I think this would be an excellent role play exam. I can't imagine a doctor office even remotely offering two guys an exam together even if they know each other. 40 or so years ago, siblings might possibly get an exam together in light of insurance, but the doc would have to be trusted by the family or their would be a chaperone. Just my thoughts.

On the role play side, I have had exams where the doc and his collogue both gave me a physical. I have also tried to set-up an exam where a couple of friends on this site either observe or get exams together.

Other than the group school/sports physicals that you excluded, and physicals with my brothers, no. I can't imagine under what circumstances a doctor would examine two people, unknown to one another, together like that. A possible exception might be things like the public health buses that come around for elderly people or that were everywhere in the first phase of the COVID pandemic, but the "exams" would be limited to very specific things such as, in those cases, BP or nasal swabs.

The real life exam was pretty tame, but I still fantasize about what could have been.

@spbb Thanks for adding the link; I went back a read you post. That was kind of what I had envisioned - to me the employment physical adds yet another dimension of anxiety, since it's tied to a new job. It is interesting that when the other guy was asked and you agreed, you both were probably thinking "what did I just agree to?" On the other hand, who calls a finger monitor of your pulse a "physical exam?" Perhaps the doc took a look at you both and thought, "who will complain about not being examined in this awkward situation?" thus allowing the doctor to leave work on time.

My wife and I don't have a joint annual physical exam, but we do have a joint annual skin exam.

Once a year, usually in late August, my wife and I visit our dermatologist to be checked for skin cancer. We schedule back-to-back appointments, but then we just both go in together and have one long appointment since I would attend my wife’s appointment and then she would attend mine.

The PA and her assistant, two women in their 30s, escort my wife and me into the exam room, and the PA hands each of us a folded-up paper gown, and instructs us to remove all of our clothing except our underpants for me and panties for my wife, unless I happen to be wearing a pair of my wife’s panties, in which case she would ask both of us to remove my wife’s panties, but I have never worn my wife’s panties, at least not to the dermatologist’s office. She tells us that when we are down to our skivvies, we are to don the gown with the opening in the front.

Before they leave the room so my wife and I can get nearly naked, I ask if we have time for a conjugal visit. For three years this request has been vetoed because at 67 years old, even a “quickie” for us would require 45 minutes and our two appointments are only 15 minutes each. Next year, I should schedule us for two extended comprehensive appointments of 60 minutes each to give us a total of two hours to accommodate the 90-minute conjugal-visit portion.

First, they do my wife and then they do me. Let me rephrase that. First, they do my wife’s exam and then they do my exam,

The PA goes over our skin with a fine-tooth magnifying glass looking for potential skin cancer spots while the assistant takes notes. To preserve our modesty, the PA shifts the paper gown around as she inspects us here and there and everywhere, although it would be more efficient if the exams were done with us naked without the gowns and underwear, as I have read in so many other posts.

Yes, I went through a real physical exam like that during compulsory military service. It was nothing like a private doctor’s visit. We were gathered as a whole group and led into a large medical hall where doctors, nurses, and medical students were waiting. Everyone had to undress completely, and we stood in lines, fully exposed, waiting for the examinations to begin.

The first part was basic measurements. They checked our height and weight one by one, noting everything down in front of the group. Standing naked on the scale while others were watching already felt uncomfortable. Then came the eye test. We had to read letters from a chart while the students took notes, and again there was no privacy. After that, doctors inspected our skin. They checked our arms, chest, back, and legs for any marks, scars, or conditions. They walked around us quickly, sometimes pointing and discussing as if we were models for a lesson.

Then came the more personal checks. We had to stand still while the doctors and students examined our genitals. They looked closely, lifted, and touched to check for any abnormalities. The medical students often leaned in, sometimes whispering to each other or even smiling, which made the situation extremely awkward. It was not done with the quiet professionalism you would expect in a normal clinic. Instead, it felt like we were being used for practice and observation.

After that, there was the testicle examination. The doctor palpated carefully while the students watched and sometimes commented. Being exposed in that way, with several pairs of eyes focused on such a private part, was one of the most embarrassing moments I have ever experienced. Finally, there was a rectal examination, which we had to undergo in front of the others waiting. That was probably the most humiliating step, because it left us with no dignity at all.

For me, a whole bunch of times. Brother, cousin, various friends, and once with my girl friend. With the various males, it was kind of common then. We got used to being undressed together. My girl friend and I did it right before we got married.

My new employer (a 3 letter US Government Agency) had me undertake a background check, fingerprinting, a polygraph, skills assessments, four employment interviews, a psychiatric evaluation and a complete physical examination.

During my physical exam a student was present. He was there to observe, however the attending doctor asked if the student could conduct the exam on me. The student was a male a few years younger than me. The attending physician (older female early 50's I would say) had to coach him a little but I guess he did a good enough job. It didn't bother me in the least. I provided the guy a learning opportunity.
