When I was 30, I had a female doctor who was around 60 years old. A very well-groomed, good-looking lady, but the rather strict type who tolerated little contradiction, and with whom I never really developed a relationship of trust.
For a long time now, I’ve been going to a medical practice staffed by two female doctors.
They’re now around 40 years old. Both are very competent, but I still have a preference for one of them. Well, it’s hard to explain why. I just feel more at ease with her.
Three years ago, a third doctor joined the practice. A young woman who was only about 27 when I saw her for the first time. And yes, that did feel a bit special. She also looks very young, which initially gave the impression that she might be less competent—though of course, that’s not the case.
But as several people here have already pointed out, what matters most is that all of these doctors are highly competent.
And yes, as a man, I simply feel more comfortable with a female doctor—at least when it comes to my general practitioner.
These days, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find a male GP here in Belgium.
And in the near future, it will become even harder, as medical schools already have a clear majority of female students.
