Examination of Drs and Nurse Practioners and other Medical Staff

I'd like to know who does the examinations for the physicians who come and work for the different practices and hospitals? Are your examinations as detailed as they are for us patients? Are you afforded the same level of modesty and patient sensitivities? Do you feel that you are above it all and do not need another person examinng you just the way we are examined in your presence? Id love to hear some opionions and experiences from the Medical Fraternity. After all "what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander".

As a physician, and especially now that I'm retired, I have always had a Primary Care Provider. I've always tried to follow the same screening and vaccination advice that I give to my patients. At this point I am up to date on shots, and have had EKG, CXR, DRE to check for Prostate Cancer and yearly Fecal Immune testing for Colon Cancer, and yearly exam (although I've lamented in other threads here about the jump from exam-based testing to screening by lab/procedure). I have not seen a Dermatologist for a full skin exam, but watch that myself to a degree. I do enjoy a bit of privilege in being able to call in and say, hey this is what is going on, I'd say it's diagnosis X. Can you call such and such in for me?

We’ve, as non medical professionals but with extensive history and rapport with some of our doctors,have the same level of trust in requesting tests without screening

When I was a Corpsman and did physicals, I was examined like everyone else with complete thoroughness. The only difference is that I was more likely to see a Medical Officer than another corpsman. Only one duty station did I work with a PA, and I did get examined by him a few times.

I love stories were a female nurse or technician working for a doctor or hospital is examined by males that she works with. I would assume there is a lesser level of modesty expected. Any expiriences would be great to hear...

I have worked in a hospital for many years.

One day, several nurses and some other staff members who work together were talking about having to perform resuscitation measures on an Associate.

One of the pretty female nurses spoke up and said that she would rather die than have her breasts exposed in front of her friends during cardio version and chest compressions. She was serious!

I did not say anything to her in front of our co-workers but I STRONGLY DISAGREE with her statement!!!

What stranger could possibly care more about her life personally than HER FRIENDS who are professionally trained in resuscitation measures?

Yes, I am a male and not a pretty female, but I believe my friends will try harder to save my life than anyone else who does not have a vested interest in our friendship! They will try harder and for a longer time period than someone who doesn’t know me. So what if they see my naked body and penis!

I feel this way too if it is not life and death but just if it is a medical procedure where they see me naked. I think my friends truly care about me, I know that I would try harder for them too if they were lying there naked!

I agree that modesty should be out the window when its life and death and that friends and coworkers would most likely serve you better in that senario. However, when it comes to routine examinations and exposure I could see why it would be much more embarrassing. Thats what makes it such erotic senario for me.

As another retired physician I, like @DocH2O , have always had a PCP, gotten annual physicals, and colonoscopies and immunizations per current recommendations of the USPHSTF. I believe in the benefits of Western medicine so why would I not want to avail myself of those things I have been recommending to and performing on my patients over all these decades. I can't say it's always pleasant but it's always been professionally performed. So next week I have my first consultation with a urologist. I hope i feel the same way after that.

@Pollux Probably not at your first consultation with the urologist, but I bet you ten bucks that within a year he recommends a cystoscopsy! Seems to be a thing with them. My PCP says lots of her patients get them recommended. Maybe it’s the urology clinic I go to.

I agree! It's all about the dollar! They can't make the big bucks in the office! Also there is the CYA aspect.
