OH YES. About a decade ago, I had moved to a new city and randomly felt something weird on/around my cervix one day in the shower. I made the earliest appointment that I could with the family practice that I had gone to for care when I was in college. Well, the earliest appointment available was with one of the most elderly looking men I’ve ever seen practicing medicine - like if he’d told me he was retiring at the end of the week, I’d say it was about a decade overdue. He was actually an incredibly kind and attentive physician. I did feel comfortable after talking with him about my medical history, etc. and didn’t have any qualms about him doing the exam (other than he had HUGE hands…but hey, let’s make things real weird).
Before the exam, he asks if one of his medical students can observe. Sure, why the hell not, a pelvic exam really wasn’t any big deal to me by that point in my life, and I assumed it’s probably not something a lot of women would actually consent to. He lets me undress, etc. then comes back into the room with the most miserable looking human being I’ve ever encountered in a medical setting (and I’ve been in many over the years). We get started with the exam, the med student stands at my side, and the entire time, I can just feel their discomfort radiating off of them. The doctor was…er…VERY thorough (rather heavy handed, maybe) and at one point, I look up and this medical student makes eye contact with me, then gives me the MOST uncomfortable, withering look.
I think my discomfort and unease was probably just the vibe I was picking up from this poor student, but it was exponentially more uncomfortable for me on account of the invasiveness of my exam and how disturbingly OLD the doctor was. I never did go back to the doctor, but I have allowed other medical students in on my exams. Nothing has ever come close to that experience.
