Rectal thermometer is broken

What should I do if the rectal thermometer breaks in the rectum?

If glass go yo a&e

Kiss your ass goodbye. Then go to a neurosurgeon. The thermometer might damage your brain.

Um I don’t think it should or will just break in your rectum unless you fall in your bottom while it is inserted!

Either way; if it breaks inside you; you should call 911 or get to the Emergency Room STAT…..that means IMMEDIATELY! 😬😳

Elemental mercury isn't that toxic. That said, I don't know how chemically reactive the Gallium alloy in modern glass thermometers is. I've accidentally broken one, and the spilled alloy immediately oxidized into grey dust.

The biggest hazard would be broken glass in the rectum - this would cause lacerations, and possibly a bowel perforation.

Mercury is indeed not terribly toxic. One time someone decided ( long story) to put some mercury from a thermometer into a capsule and give it to my brother to swallow. The mercury passed though his digestive track and eventually into the toilet....he had no adverse affects. He did go to the doctor, but he was fine.
