I went to the pediatrician until I graduated college. Every time I went in you would hear crying and screaming, most likely from kids getting a penicillin shot. It felt strange in the waiting room with a bunch of younger kids, although they were some my age as well. The nurse would always have me undress to my underwear. Gowns did not exist in that office. I needed a parent/chaperone through 18 years old. Sometimes the nurse would talk to you through your parent, such as have him undress down to his underwear. Also through 18 years old everyone got their temperature taken rectally, whether there on a sick visit, or routine physical. Even when in college and they started taken it orally, if my temperature was high, like 102 or so, they would “get another reading” rectally.
I could be wrong, but it always seemed like the nurses enjoyed shaking down the rectal thermometer, and they would always put a huge glob of Vaseline on the thermometer, far more than necessary. They would hold the thermometer in place, and from time to time pat your backside while waiting for the reading.
Doors were always completely or partially open, offering no privacy from anyone walking the hallway. I will admit I saw my share of kids as well in similar fashion. I always hated the words “I need you to lie down on the table and turn over on your tummy.” When you are in that position nothing good is going to happen.
After the temperature taking I would be told to remove my undershirt and sit on the table to wait for the doctor. They were very thorough back then. Everything was examined, and eventually you had to take your underpants off as well for further examination. I remember when the doctor seemed finished I was about to put my underpants on, and he told me not yet. The nurse is coming in with medication, which meant a shot.
It was always one embarrassment after another, and while I absolutely hated it, the fetish somehow kicked in, and it was most pronounced between 13-26 years old.
Now, while getting a bit older, I don’t really take my temperature everyday like some people here, but the memories will never fade.
