How commonplace is spanking today?

I feel it's very rare today. Society turned away from it being a normal way to discipline kids. Throughout the years in the recent past unfortunately many parents instead of spanking their kids when they had to teach them a lesson in what they did wrong many parents beat their kids and did harm to them physically and mentally as they grew up. So because many went to beating instead of spanking most of society threw the baby out with the bathwater so to say and turned away from an easy way to teach kids. Beating is wrong and horrible but spankings done the correct way work.

When I was growing up in the 70s and 80s my parents did spank me at times. I was generally a very well behaved kid for the most part but there were the times when I did something to my younger brother and said something I should have not said. My mom usually did spankings. She always explained what I did was bad and wrong and said she had to spank my butt. She always only spanked me on my bottom and it was always on my bare bottom. She slapped me never hit or beat me ever. She just caused a sharp sting and burn. Usually 5 to 10 slaps depending on what I did wrong. As you can guess I always cried. My mom hugged me afterwards and always told me she loved me so much and that she hated to do this but she had to. My mom then made sure that I knew what I had done was wrong and she asked me if I learned my lesson. I always said yes while I was still crying. This is how it should be in my opinion. A spanking is a tool to help the child learn what is wrong and that a wrong has consequences. Again never beatings only spankings. The people that beat their kids are the problem and it's now why most of society has turned away from spankings as a tool.
