Was your temperature taken rectally because the other thermometer (oral, infrared…) was missing or not working?

We have had both happen to my wife in the past as I am rarely ill.

My wife just puts things away in the first spot while quickly cleaning up, this has resulted in us finding the oral thermometer in unexpected places. She has had the rectal thermometer up her behind on a few occasions because we were not able to find where she put the oral thermometer after its last use.

Digital thermometers have also been a problem. Dead batteries and a very unexpected normal oral reading have also led her to be on her belly, pants down and a rectal thermometer embedded between her cheeks.

When I was growing up my Mom always took my temperature rectally even into my mid-20's. That's just what she was used to doing. It seemed to be standard in her family, passed down from my grandparents to all their daughters.
