Enemas or Suppositories

Who has used either of these and which is better for constipation….enemas or suppositories!

I need something and nothing oral is working…I’ve even tried drinking coffee and doing the thermometer trick….still no luck!

Suppositories take a little bit of time to work, whereas an enema provides immediate relief. If given the choice, I will go with the enema every time. Warm water (just above body temperature) with a small bit of mild soap added. Take it and hold it as long as possible before releasing.

Sounds like a good enema is the answer. Fast,pleasant and works.

@WET have you ever tried using a rectal thermometer to prob your bottom after using an enema or suppository…you know to help get things moving a little faster?

I use both, either or depending on mood or the situation. An enema is always the most thorough, and aside from the set up prep and post cleanup, it's the quickest. There are the disposable enemas which are a bit more convenient, which I use sometimes too.

Sometimes I prefer suppositories. I like a suppository when I can enjoy extra time to sit on the toilet. A suppository is my preference when I want to take my time and pass a more solid feeling stool.

I have used suppositories only a few times but I have not found them particularly useful. Only once during a trip, they were convenient for their practicality but they do not have the effect of an enema.

An enema, especially the larger kind (2 liters), is the stronger (but admittedly more undignified) option. I once was so constipated that neither oral laxatives nor suppositories worked, but definitely an enema cleared it up.

If I am constipated I prefer using a couple of supositorie's prior to several enemas. That way I can create a space for the water to go. If one is too compacted it makes having a good enema almost impossible.

Why limit yourself to either/or?

It depends on how constipated you are, how many days have you not had a Bowel movement? Are you pretty backed up with hard poop and unable to pass the immediate 'blockage'?

I have a bowel condition that occasionally gives me constipation. For 2 or 3 days I just don't have any feeling for, or essentially the need or urge for a BM. Then after day 4 I become very compacted and feel full but I struggle to pass anything without a major effort. By day 6 I will use a suppository, inserted just past my sphincter and try to hold for as long as possible.

This usually helps to clean out the lower 'blockage'. Then I'll resort to taking a warm soapy enema to take care of the rest. Hope that helps, good luck

I prefer a couple of inserts with a bulb syringe and warm water, adding a pinch of Castile soap if I feel the need for a stronger solution. Getting into a knee-chest position helps with retention. It’s usually enough to get me going — surprisingly effective. If you have a partner who can give the enema, that's even better!! A nurse taught this to my husband and me many years ago.

Like both, often back to back. Enema is more fulfilling physically and leaves me feeling free of bloating and thin. Suppositories have more of a fetish throwback to my childhood as that’s all that was ever administered to me by my mom and aunt.

I travel often for work, frequently dehydrated and therefore constipated within the first few days. Starting the morning with a glycerin suppository or two, which I can usually hold for an hour or two and rarely result in anything “urgent,” keeps me feeling regular and more comfortable in various suits. Also easily able to put in carryon luggage and even administer in the air!

However, I have problem of bm simce when I was a child.

In my case the only remedy that work is bulb or bag enema, but I have a structural illness of my intestine.

For "normal" people, I think that for an occasional costipation the better remedy is a glycerin microenema like Microlax. You take the liquid in for a while, like 5 minutes after insertion, and after you can release and poop as well. I think it works better than suppositories and is also faster and better than oral laxatives.

But it depends from the cause. If it is chronic or depends from other problem, the fact change.
