Enema after hernia surgery

I recently had surgery to repair a double hernia on my left side and a small hernia on my right side. It's been four weeks ago and I'm wondering, is it safe to take an enema or two now or should I wait for a couple of more weeks

Personally, I would ask my surgin that question.

When I had my penectomy and perinial urethostomy, before I left the hospital, I mentioned that I often get constipated and my go to remedy was an enema. I was given the OK. But we are talking a totally differant surgery. If not absolutely necessary I would give it some time.

I had to use an enema for bowel movements after umbilical hernia repair to keep from popping my stitches. I had a visiting nurse to administer using a plastic bucket. I got tired of having to have an enema every other day. It was an interesting time. I watched the nurse rub her hands together in the bucket to make soapsuds, then it was enema time. One time she was in a hurry and simply squirted hand soap from the sink in the bucket. I guess soap is soap. This was in the early 90's and enema were still in common use at most hospitals. Fleets were a rarity.

I suspect it's not yet healed enough to be absolutely safe.

My recommendation would be to ask the surgeon, but if that's simply not going to happen, then I'd wait until all restrictions on activity have been lifted--when you've got the green light to lift any weight you like, go for a run, shovel snow, whatever vigorous activity you do.

When Mr. PinotNoir had hernia surgery, that was longer than four weeks, but I would not be surprised if it varied depending on the size of the repair and whether it was open or laparoscopic surgery.

My surgery was laparoscopic and now six weeks ago. I'm embarrassed to ask my doctor if it's okay to take an enema because I'm afraid he is going to ask a lot of questions....

He's a younger surgeon and I'm sure has no concept of the enjoyment some of us, like me, get from a series of enemas for pleasure and/or relaxation. So asking that question wasn't an option. It's been a little over six weeks now.... Guys, any thoughts on the subject ? ? ? ?

My thought is unchanged. Are you fully cleared to do any physical activity you want? Then it's probably safe enough. If it were me, I'd probably avoid anything "pressurized," since the great expansion of your colon could further weaken any other thin spots in your abdominal wall. It's not unusual for a person who's had one hernia repaired to develop others. (My husband had one fixed, is slated for the repair of two more.)

Also if it were me, I'd probably go for small quantity, slow flow, lots of atmosphere.

If you really can't wait or actually need an enema for constipation, I would keep the enema volume to a quart for a while. High volume enemas can actually cause a hernia, especially on older people.

I had a routine hernia op and was hoping an enema might be given, prior or after the op. Alas it was not to be

Today its almost impossable to get an enema in the hospital, even when you despertaly need one!!! I had one ordered by my surgeon, and somehow it was changed to a supository that didnt work and followed by Milk of magnisia. that really set me back in my recouperation. The nurses were understaffed and having a rough patiant day. I believe thet said no way to the order.
