I had an exam a few months ago when I went to the docs with stomach pains.
There was a junior doc observing, which I'd said was fine, and he described what he was doing using medical terms rather than referring to my tummy and tummy button.
He asked what was wrong with me, then asked me to take off my t-shirt and lie down, exposing the red waistband of my spiderman boxers above my jeans.
He started by looking from the end of the bed "we start by looking for any scarring on the patients stomach."
He then palapated, first with one hand then deeper with two hands, asking if I was in any pain.
Then he palpated my spleen, liver and bladder asking me to take deep breaths in andnoit while he did it.
Next, he said "We need to check for any hernias, ideally the patient would be fully exposed from their nipples down to their knees, but normally that's isn't necessary. So I'll press on the patients pelvis on both sides and ask him to turn left and cough then turn right and cough."
When he auscultsted he said "We'll listen directly above the patients umbilicus, directly for up to two minutes for normal bowel sounds, then in all four quadrants surrounding the umbilicus. Then listen superior to the umbilicus for any fruits, and 3-4cm laterally and superior to the umbilicus on both sides for any bruits."
I was then percussed deep all over as well.
