Today I doubt if many kids have rectal temps taken. With all these electronic devices that go in ears, etc., what will be the future? If one does not experience a true rectal temp, how can one develop that delight of submitting to a rectal temp and taking a rectal temp. I think you’ll find that even though the rectal temperature method may well have ebbed over many years, there are still times when in a medical setting it is still done. And there are reasons for that.

Why did you grow up taking your temperature every day? Were there medical reasons? Did your mum start doing it every day or did you do it yourself?

Every time I try to look up rectal temperature information on the internet, it seems like there’s no interest in it, from neither a medical nor sexual standpoint. It's right that with the current technology, rectal temps should become more rarely for kids. However, rectal temps stay the most accurate way to check the temperature with accuracy.

During Covid I was discussing the virus with a young female ( 19) I had befriended. Wen I worked in ICU we always measured temperature rectally as we need core temperature to monitor for signs of sepsis. We had a long flexible plastic rectal temperature probe. With the advent of urinary catheter with a temperature port we started using those instead of the rectal probe , this was provided the patient was catheterized. So the future of rectal temperature monitoring in ICU is slowly be consigned to history.

I think the frequency of rectal temperature taking has become almost nonexistent. Technology, modesty, and social norms have changed dramatically. Unless you were raised in a family that still considers them the gold standard, the majority of the world is using the oral route, or infrared gun.
