Can you get a good enema while Standing orsitting on the toilet?.

That's the question. I cannot. I get (maybe) a pint inside, and that's it before I leak (or gush). If you succeed at this, please tell us how you do it. I've used regular nozzles, colon tubes, inflatables. No luck.

I quite often take an enema while standing in the bathtub at the end of my shower. The red bag is hung from the shower rod and is about 3 feet above my hips. I massage my stomach while the water is running in as it helps to get the water to go in deeper without any cramping. Once I have the full 2 quarts, I withdraw the nozzle, rinse off, dry myself with a towel, and then go over to the toilet and release. I have never had a problem with not being able to take the whole bag. I have occasionally added an extra quart to the bag before ending the session as described above.

Also, as I stated on a previous post, I have discovered that while standing on my vibrating plate massager, I can take a full 3-quart enema while the machine rocks my body from side to side. This option is very pleasurable.

I frequently hang my bag aside the toilet, and take however many fills and whatever volumes I can, before expelling. I will often stand and bend forward to allow more solution before sitting. I find that if I get the nozzle or tubing beyond that second sphincter, the urge to expel is diminished.

There are times that I may refill my bag a second or third time to more completely empty. Periodically, I then lie down in the tub for a full 2 quart enema.

If I'm in the shower, I can usually get the full bag in after some of those quickie enemas to empty my rectal vault. Gravity can make things a little bit tougher, but bending forward or squatting to increase the flow sometimes helps.

I have never been able to!

It is less comfortable and less effective and just generally not as good if I can't get my Abdomen either horizontal or tilted slightly head down.

I do it standing up only when I have to do it quickly, when I don't have enough time for a normal enema. I use a bulb and insert 500 - 600 ml of hot water from 2 to 3 insertions. It is not a very pleasant position for me and it makes me use the toilet urgently.

Receiving enemas while standing? Are difficult to hold.

Probably because the colon fills completely from bottom to top. When kneeling or lying down, the solution prefers to penetrate into the depths of the colon, following gravity.

Sometimes I have to take an enema while standing diagonally against the wall with both hands and legs spread, similar to a police search. I have to ask for relief pretty quickly.

I have been doing standing enemas for many years. I found a very simple way: I built various nozzles, of different shapes and lengths, which can be mounted on a suction cup arm made from a car cell phone holder. They are very stimulating nozzles, they give rise to strong contractions that push the water upwards, facilitating retention. Very enjoyable enemas!

Well, I used to do long multiple enema sessions before I was married. I would usually take 3 - 5 enemas in a session, and frequently do the last one of the session standing with the bucket hung from the shower curtain rod. I would make up 4 quarts of soapy solution and try to take it all. This would only be possible on the last enema of the session. Sometimes I made it all the way to 4 quarts, but often I would have to stop at about 3.5 quarts. The sensation was incredible, and I would try to hold the enema in for at least a few minutes.

I do enemas sitting on the toilet in two ways: the first with my continuous system (see the photos in my albums), but which allows me to close the jet and hold; the other when I was travelling. I was afraid of dirtying the bed and the bathrooms were always too small even to get on all fours, so I made light self-retention nozzles which, when I sit on the edge of the toilet, remain blocked and allow me to take my two liters

I can't imagine how you would do it standing, unless you use a Higginson pump.

As a result of colon cancer I'm pretty much incontinent, so I use enemas daily (sometimes even 2, or in rare cases 3, times a day) to manage. I've tried taking enemas lying on the bathroom floor but it's just too uncomfortable and, since I'm incontinent, how am I supposed to get from the floor to the toilet without making a mess?

Enter the inflatable colon tube (basically, a Foley catheter). I take my enemas sitting on the toilet. Insert the tub as far as it will go, inflate the balloon end to fix it in place and keep the water in, take 2 quarts of warm water, deflate balloon, and ... voila!

@RandomRoverandom, thanks for your post. I've thought of the foley catheter idea, and your experience leads me to think I'll try it. I have a similar problem to you, since I've also had colon surgery and lost a good portion of my "plumbing." No cancer, but I had a bowel rupture in late 2022, which got me 20+ days in the hospital and 2 surgeries. Lots of important stuff gone (ileocecal valve, sigmoid), but enough left to enjoy life. It's important, facing these challenges, to figure out what works & use it. Your use of the Foley mimics what's called "transanal irrigation," which is used by para/quadriplegics and people with spina bifida & colon/rectal cancer survivors. Coloplast & other medical equipment providers supply these, but it's a lot easier (and cheaper) to do your own. One thing that bothers me is the lack of intelligent aftercare with these surgeries. Most recommended are things like Immodium or fiber. Fiber doesn't help, & I haven't tried immodium. The only thing that really increases quality of life, according to comments by the actual patients and the more concerned docs, is daily enemas. VERY few docs/nurses recommend this, and the awareness about what happens after this type of surgery, even among the providers, is abysmal. I've linked to some helpful materials on my blog, but it's not easy to find. YouTube is much better than the browsers in this. What's also amazing is that if you have a colostomy, irrigating that colostomy to prevent drainage into the bag is fairly common. What's the material difference, except in one instance the irrigation takes place through the stoma, and in the second, through the rectum? Weird.

Unfortanatly, today there seems to be very little help after surgery. The doctor is done and your on your owne. After a partial penectomy and a failed perinial urthostomy, there is no help or support. I'm trying to keep the strictures from blocking the flow by self cathing daily. All the doctors want to do is more surgery. Unfortanatly penile cancer in the US is very rare, and local urologists won't even make an appointment. Also there are no self help groups that I can find.

@Stump, have you looked at Reddit? While I excoriate them a bit for some of their attitudes, they do have some material on subjects you might not think. I got a lot of info from r/ostomy when mine was new.

My answer is no! I have tried several times and never works. Usually won't even flow unless I bend way over. I have also tried using a bulb syringe, no better luck. Gravity is just too strong a force. The old fleet bag enemas had complete instructions, the first one was, "the enema must be taken while laying down."

I sometimes take a enema while standing up in the hot showerband it seems to be pretty effective. There is no problem with an entire bag (2 quarts) and the urgency is not all that different than on3 oqyig down. Denise
