Elective/Preventative Tonsillectomy

Would a surgeon perform a tonsillectomy to prevent tonsillitis? Essentially, could I elect to have my tonsils removed to prevent them from ever becoming inflamed and possibly needing them out later?

I wouldn’t think a doctor would rake out your tonsil unless there was some reason to suspect/prevent a probable downstream problem. But not if healthy with no specific reason. Just my opinion.

That article says that frequent ear and throat infections may be a reason to remove tonsils, but the surgery is usually a last resort if antibiotics don’t work or repeated problems. I didn’t pick up they were advocating it as elective surgery. Still, they could be eager to recommend it for not so serious issues.

What doesn’t surprise me, is the article does plant a seed for susceptible surgery candidates! Like the TV ads that hawk a drug and tell you to “ask your doctor if xyz is right for you”.

Maybe the ice cream industry is behind this?
