Spanked in public?

Was anyone spanked in a public place growing up? It's less common now, but I remember witnessing parents giving a couple of swats in the grocery or department store and threatening more. I imagined that spankings were being given in fitting rooms, bathrooms, etc., and fantasized about it happening to me, but never saw it happen.

I was spanked at a family reunion. I was taken into our cottage and soundly spanked by my father on my bare bum. No one saw it but believe me everyone heard it!!!

Back in the 50’s and 60’s I saw some swats given by angry mothers in the grocery store. Never happened to me or my sisters. I haven’t seen it publicly in many years, seems less acceptable these days or fear someone would call child protective services if they saw it happen today.

Back in the '60s and '70s when i was growing up it was by no means unusual to witness kids being spanked in public! Sometimes they might just get a swat or two; other times an actual spanking! In some cases the spanking might be on a fully or partially clothed bottom; but it would often be an old fashioned bare bottom spanking for all to see! Rigel is quite right in saying that the two reasons why public spanking is hardly or seldom seen today and in more recent years is firstly, that it is, by many folks, no longer considered an acceptable practice; and secondly, parents fear now being reported to the authorities - Child Protection Services - and are too afraid to publicly discipline ther kids, anymore! Without getting into the rights or wrongs of all this (I have already been warned about 'ranting' by one of the administrators) it shows you just how much times have changed. When I was growing up another parent or adult would not even think about showing their disapproval if you spanked your kid in public. They would invariably either mind their own business or actually show their approval and be supportive of your actions! Also the authorities back then viewed spanking as a parental right and even duty! As I have said, in what is a purely non-judgemental observation, times have indeed changed!

They might still be more common that some imagine. I was sat in a pub earlier this evening in a seaside resort in Yorkshire and on the table across from me was a couple in their 20's with a son aged about 6 and a daughter about 3. They were a loud family both parents shouting at their kids who were in turn running wild in the pub. They were aggravating me while I was trying to eat dinner with my family. Anyway the kids were eventually made to sit at the table and their dinner came out. The little girl ate hers nicely but the boy started acting up, refusing to touch his and throwing items from his plate. Mother was screaming at him to stop it, father also telling him to behave. Kid carries on playing up. Dad finally had enough and grabbed son by his arm, pulled him from his chair, flipped him against his knee and planted two fairly hefty swats to the kids backside. This was in front of everyone. The fact that no one said anything was possibly an indication of the fact that like me, many possibly felt that the good hiding was deserved. Although had they been a nice family I am sure things would never have reached that point in the first place. It clearly is something that the chid is used to because he only cried a few crocodile tears and gave his father a very defiant look (in my day it would have earned me another spanking!). Thankfully the whole family did quieten down after that and until the time me and my son left there were no more incidents. I have witnessed several spankings of late, so maybe some parents are beginning to see that the adage of spare the rod and spoil the child has some merit?

Good point, Lukkas! There are always exceptions to the rule of course! Also many parents nowadays, in the current climate, with so many of the problems we face, might actually welcome a return to more 'traditional values and practices'!

I've related this elsewhere but a few years ago I was walking down the aisle of a Home Depot somewhat behind a couple maybe late 30s or early 40s in age. I was thinking she had a nice bottom displayed in nicely fitting jeans when suddenly I heard a few sharp words between them. He brought his hand back and popped her hard on the butt. Long ago, I was in a hospital waiting room as my parents were visiting a sick friend. Across the way, a younger girl, maybe 4-5 years old was making a fuss. In the blink of an eye, her dad had her over his knee, yanked down her stretch pants and gave her bare bottom several swats, then covered her up again. So here's the other public, or in this case semi-public, spanking I recall. It occurred in the late 60s when I was in college so that's the context. My first wife and I went Friday nights to play pinochle with a couple maybe ten years older than we were, and this was one spanking family I'll tell you! They had 3 kids: an 11 yo girl, a 7 yo boy and a 3 yo girl and the parents would regale us with stories of the spankings they'd given the kids. Anyway, they had a cabin in the Oregon Cascades they invited us to for a weekend. We were joined by his two brothers and their spouses. Never happened to me and I've only ever witnessed the most minuscule of instances where a parent just gave the kid a quick warning swat. I'd personally rather the parent just spank the kid and stop the problem than beg or berate them to behave.

This brings back a memory. It wasn't at a pool, instead it was at a beach on Long Island Sound, on a hot summer day in the mid 1960s. Indeed at any event or normal activity, where there were many kids present, there was a reasonably good chance that a spanking would be administered! Sometimes if the kid was lucky he/she might get the swats across a fully or partially clothed bottom; (with, in many instances, more severe discipline to follow when they got home) but more often than not, it would be a proper, old-fashioned spanking on the bare behind, in front of everybody! And inevitably a kid, often more than one kid, would be threatened with a spanking, at such gatherings!
