Article, "CURED by CLINICS" - depersonalized enema experience from the 1930s

I love this except of an article about being a hospital patient in a war in the 1930s. Such a great similie at the end describing the depersonalization and humiliation that comes with hospitals of the day.

“I undressed and climbed between the sheets, shrinking into myself, seeking vainly for a refuge where my person and personality would not be stripped so wantonly before all. The meagreness of the blankets took my mind off introspection. I lay shivering with nervousness and cold, when a nurse approached to give a specially ordered enema. All this pitilessly exposed, with doctors passing the foot of the bed—casually, it is true—with no more feeling than if one were putting gasoline into an engine.”

Things did not significantly change in the 70's. I have written about receiving an enema in an Army hospital ward where the curtains were pulled along side the bed but the foot of the bed was open to any (and all) who passed by. A nurse and a a med tech walked by and the nurse stopped and had a brief conversation with the med tech administering the enema.

There was no real sense of privacy and I can certainly relate to the passage in the article.
