I was in the hospital with an issue with my leg.
The regular floor nurse asked me about when I had my last BM and I honestly told her it was the day before my admission. She asked me if I got constipated at home, what would I do about it.
I quickly responded "a Fleet enema. They're easy, and they work really quickly, and then I'm not constipated any more."
She said oh, and went on about her duties.
Asking me daily if I had had a BM for the next couple days I told her no. ( I wasn't really eating much and the drugs they were giving me had that side effect.
On the 5th day without going the Nurse said "we need to do something about this. What should we do ? " She asked.
I told her a Fleet enema would be fast and easy and that would be my preferred cure.
She said "ok. But I'll have to get that ok'd by the floor Dr"
I said "fine. Go ask"
She left and in a while came back with a bottle of stool softener pills.
I told her, "I don't want those. They make my stomach upset and take a while to work. Please can't you just give me a Fleet enema and then I won't be constipated any more"
"Ok, but I'll have to check with the Dr"
Once again I said "well then do it"
So she left and in about 10 minutes came back with the boxed enema.
I was already on my left side under the covers and she said, "it's not the Fleet brand but it's basically the same thing"
I said "yes I know"
She said "ok. Now roll over onto your side with your butt facing me, so I can give this to you.
I replied, "I think if you look on the box you'll see I should be on my left side, like I already am "
( I would have preferred it knee chest but I didn't want to push things)
She then surprised me with her reply
"Oh. I didn't know. I've never given myself a Fleet enema so I don't know what they feel like"
( What ?!?! Thanks for sharing that personal information that I didn't ask for )
She then came around to the other side of the bed and exposed my bottom.
She then blew me away with her next line.
"I've never done this before, and I'm a little nervous"
(WOW. This was going to be thee first enema this young Nurse had ever given )
I said don't be. You just stick it in and squeeze.
If you think about it, most of these are given in homes where people don't have any experience with them either.
She then told me she was going to pre lube me and spread my cheeks and rubbed some KY on my anus. I esp noticed that she rubbed for a bit, and not one quick swipe.
She then took the Fleet bottle and inserted the tip quickly ( not having done one before, she didn't know how much resistance it would get )
Ok ready ? She asked.
I said "yes" and then she began squeezing it quickly
Ooow, cold , I said. She said she was sorry, as she kept squeezing. And I said "don't worry about it that's just the way they are.
After it was all in she threw the empty enema in the trash and said, " you need to hold that for a couple minutes or until you can't any more"
I said I know, I've had these before.
After about 3; minutes I told her I needed to go.
She helped me out of bed and held a small towel to my butt as she walked me to the bathroom.
Ok I'll be back in a few minutes to see how you're doing.
Of course I exploded on the toilet.
When she came back I told her it really worked and that I had to flush twice to get it all down
At the shift change she told my new nurse that I had and enema in the morning and it worked well. She also told her that the Dr had ok'd enemas for me if I needed them
I chimed in, I shouldn't because that one really emptied me out.
I ended up getting checked out the following day and didn't have a chance for another one.
This was in 2019 right before the pandemic
